If Fraps drops your fps down to 10, you either have a really weak videocard or you did set up fraps the wrong way.

Note: Fraps limits you maximum fps to the value you set in the "Movies" tab. I.e I have to run games with Vsync that limits me to 60fps (crappy LG flatron TFT), so I set my Fraps to 60fps while recording.

Afterwards, I convert the clip into DivX (because that keeps the aspect ratio 1:1) and drop the framerate to 30fps (less filesize).

As Beepa explains, Fraps only produces a little overhead. Problem is, if it's set to record @30 fps and there is a big rush coming, your videocard has to deal with flames, explosions etc, you certainly will experience low fps under 20.

Set up Fraps to 60fps and test it. If that doesn't help enough enable the Client_physics_Optimization in your Renegade. If this fails again, get a better videocard.

Could be your hard drive. I tried recording to my external HD (usb max speed is like 480mbps) and my fps was 10, on to my regular HD was around 25. Try cleaning up your drive. I seriously doubt it is a software issue because fraps is demanding, but not that demanding.

Video recording uses a lot of CPU power too tbh. I use camtasia studio.

Just use F.R.A.P.s. it is a good program and is the most program that is generally recognized for recording it.

No wondering why: USB only theoretically supports 60 Megabyte per sec. In real life, external HDDs connected via USB are limited to somewhat around 25-35 depending on what Chipset they are connected with.

I.e. I have an external harddrive (LC-Power case with Cypress Chipset nailed together with a Hitachi UDMA133 HDD) and this is what HDtach comes up with= ~37MB/s when connected to a VIA onboard USB and only 27MB/s on my Desktops' ATI Southbridge.

Forget about this, movies have to be recorded internally. Especially when you choose full res + high fps in Fraps.

The program that saves it F.R.A.P.s. records it in enormous sizes that make it kind of hard to convert to a regular size movie to it.

Do all video recorders save the files in enormous huge files, or do some actually encode them and save them in normal size.

The reason the file size is so big is because FRAPs records files uncompressed which doesn't use a lot of CPU usage.. Once you've finished recording you then encode the file yourself to make it 'normal' size

Yea if FRAPs(or any ingame video recorders) did the encoding for you after you were finished recording something you would be getting a real bad FPS for the next 10-30 minutes.

The best free Video converter by far in my opinion has got to be Any Video Converter(http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/), it even downloads videos from youtube!
For the lowest size at a decent but not horrible quality I would recommend these Settings:

Container/Profile(file extension): .Mp4
Resolution: 320x240
Frame Rate: 30FPS
Video: 384 or 512
Audio: 128/192kbps (up to you really)
Sample: 44100

yeah thats good for youtube but thats about it. If you want something really easier to use with somewhat decent quality just use Windows movie maker. Its really easy to use and does all the work for you. My mum can even use it.

I use AVC for all of my video conversions, I only use WMM when I want to add some basic effects and tittles.
