Well, when it was my first time, my speed magically increased. It only took 30 seconds, and I was kinda embarrassed.

Sky broadband is still faster In Love and there are networks even faster than that! For £11 a month though, it's great value.

Virgin Media are currently rolling out an update to 10mb for all existing 4mb customers, which includes myself. My line was upgraded a few months back, but it's been ongoing region by region since the start of the year or so.

The fastest my Cablevision connection has ever been when downloading files, without a download accelerator, was, I believe, 1.6mb/sec. That was actually very recently too.

It all really depends on the source location for the download, but I still get pretty blazing fast speeds.

Not only that the british drive on the wrong side on the streets, now I see your progress bar running from right to left?

Congrats to your ISP improvement. To compare this, here is a screener from one of the fastest ISPs in Germany (VDSL25 - Deutsche Telekom)

index.php?t=getfile&id=7600&private=0

This is from my Uncle, I have DSL6000 which means 6MBit down and ~700KBit up. This ist the most available DSL here in Germany. The VDSL requires extremely short cables so it's only available in the big cities.

But there are also some Cable ISPs who offer up to 30MBit down / 10MBit up which reaches customers living out there in the wasteland ^^.

haha, nah, The file was already finished downloading and Windows was checking the file so instead of a complete download bar, it just goes from right to left, that's a hard one to explain.

Just found out Liverpool got upgraded to Fiber Optics which is pretty damn leet if you ask me, further more a free upgrade from 4MB to 10MB? even so more leet.

I'm now a happy customer.

Don't VM still have a terrible throttling policy?

My ISP has a policy of absuing connection protocols and watching anything that isn't their standard hardware respond correctly to their incorrect use of protocols, then crash. Sad

Yay TalkTalk.

Broadband service gets throttled at 6-9 in the evening, But it's barely noticeable.

It's actually really bad if you qualify for being throttled (which I would on a daily basis). http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

I barely notice the change but I don't know alot of people around here on Virgin media.. everyone seems to use BT or AOL. Neutral

But when I'm downloading stuff it's at midnight and on wards, so I'm generally reaching my top download speed with torrents and stuff.

Though I'll have to put it to the test to make sure.

You can do worse, a lot worse. There is a company that throttles to lower than 56k. That's kilobits not bytes.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

We've had this issue in Germany a while ago.

One of the big ISPs (1&1) began to fire their customers who produced exzessive (I think Torrent) traffic. 1&1 even offered money to them to leave, no matter if the contracts minimum runtime has been accomplished or not.

Some other ISPs followed this example. Others don't but I know some Cable Providers that also throttle bandwidth in the evenings.

So a Flatrate isn't a real Flatrate anymore. The DSL prices are lowered to the ground in this country and that is the problem: They are all miscalculated. They should be lifted up to get real flats back.
