It's interesting, but it's only a novelty.

It's nothing new. There's a reason it isn't everywhere. It's insanely insecure, poor signal, lots of static.

Have you ever used one of those intercom systems that you just plug into your power outlet? We used to have one at are house. We had to stop using it when we moved because our new neighbours several blocks away were joining in on our conversations.

In the Netherlands there have been try-out for enabling internet across the (main) power lines. The test hasn't been successful, and AFAIK the project is cancelled. The reason for this was that the reliability was rather poor. And I don't mean the reliability of our power network, just the internet across it.
You can purchase so called "dLAN" adapters, which channels your network across your inhouse power system.
In the Netherlands that is pretty secure as we have filters between the actual powergrid and the inhouse power network. These filters filter out any signal above I think 100Hz. Not entirely sure about the frequency though. Anyway, these adapters use frequencies of 1000+hz at the very least.

Ya when I first read about this I thought it was pretty stupid and risky.

Not everything is as it appears
Untouchable
If you wired a house with the intent of doing that from the start you could do it successfully and get good/consistant results. Of course if you are going to do than then just wire the damn house with CAT5 and be done with it. Just sayin.
