I added the option.
I agree with your assessment. The game follows in the line of C&C 3 and KW. Same format but different units, factions, and storyline.
IMHO, it is more of a remake of RA2 except the storyline changes we see with Japan.

I just CANCELLED all plans for buying Red Alert 3.
As per my previous understanding, being connected to the internet and installing/uninstalling would give an install "credit" back. This would allow for indefinite uninstalls/installs as long as it is done on 1 computer and the limit is within 5 installations.
However, the sheer absurdity of the DRM has been revealed as I just now learned that NO, THERE WILL NOT BE ANY INSTALL/UNINSTALL "CREDITS" whether you are connected to the internet or not.
So plainly: after 5 installs, you are screwed and have to call EA to re-install the game for the 6th time. You will be treated like a little pirate kid by EA Customer Service as you explain to them why you should be allowed to re-install a $60+ game you purchased with your own money for the 6th time.
As a computer and gaming enthusiast, my 2 gaming computers undergo constant changes every alternate weeks and the draconian DRM limits are totally unacceptable.
It's absurd because I initially found the DRM satisfactory based entirely on the uninstallation "credits" scheme. With that removed as well, it kills all my options.
As much as I would love to massproduce squadrons of Soviet Twinblade gunships and fight online, this would be the first ever C&C game I am going to skip entirely without a single bit of remorse. Piracy of any kind is not in my vocabulary.
As a FPS/RTS gamer, I look forward to StarCraft II and in the meantime, I am considering trying out Universe at War (despite it's minor flaws) for a change.
NOTE regarding poll:
Subtract ONE (1) vote from option #1 and add ONE (1) vote to option #3.
EDIT: Typo

I already pre-ordered it.

Huh? RA2 was on a completely different engine, everything that is in RA3 was modeled completely from scratch...
Lone0001 wrote on Thu, 02 October 2008 01:23 | Another thing is they are also too lazy to make a new UI, it reminds me directly of General's UI.
|
Again, huh? How can it remind you of Genera's UI? I bet you haven't even seen RA3's UI. It is the same as C&C3's UI just with a new Naval tab and control bars on the bottom left & right of the screen.
General's UI was a sub-bar, not a side bar... it was completely different.

The only similarity of the Allied WF to the GDI WF is that it has that scaffolding on the top of it. However the one in C&C3 a movable crane that moved forward and backward to give supplies to the constructing units.
The Allied one in RA3 is in a different spot as and is immovable as it has a conveyor belt/lift inside of it that raises supplies and carries them into the garage from above.
Another thing to notice is the side part of the structure which wasn't in the C&C3 version as well as the actual garage being on the opposite side of the structure.
I don't know about you, but if you can somehow prove they are the same models, but edited, that in no way makes EA "lazy." It would be at least 3x harder to add such things onto an existing model than it would to create something from scratch. Trust me, I know, I've tried doing such things in the past.
There is a difference between using the same design concept and using the same model.

Nune wrote on Mon, 06 October 2008 18:08 | EA actually listened to consumer opinion :/, you can install ra3 on up to 5 computers and it can be reinstalled and uninstalled as many times as you like however you must be connected to the internet so the uninstall can be declared. I'm ok with this method
as there is no longer a limit to installation as long as you uninstall correctly.
I think this was a result of the backlash against that spore game that would only allow 3 installs .

Holy cow man you did not read my previous post. It was based on that scheme that I had plans to pre-order the Premier version.
But no, EA retracted that statement. Once you have installed the game for the 5th time, the automatic activation WILL FAIL and you will have to call EA Customer Service.
Chris Corry, on behalf of EA, said initially that connected to the internet would give you back an installation count. But he admitted it was a "mistake" and retracted his statement.
Read his thread here:
http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread.jspa?threadID=430797
Most accurate information on Red Alert III's DRM:
http://planetcnc.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=153673
In short, just forget this game and boycott it. I am not going to spend $60+ on a rental only to buy the same game over again after the 5 installation limit runs out. I am not calling Customer Service (what a joke!).
Oh and how long do you think the authentication servers will be online? Will they be online 10 years from now? I don't think so.

he retracted it :/...
at least rate ea will just drive more people into downloading torrents as they will get tired of the treatment they get when they try to stay within the law.
and with more people doing it, the chances of getting caught will decrease thus the risk will decrease thus more people will start illegal downloading.
and with less revenue eventually EA and other game producers will not be able to afford to finance mroe and more games and as a result gaming will die with no new products on the market.
Its a extreme outcome but a possible one.
