Quote: | WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.
"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.
PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

Yeah, I always had a hunch that being a vegetarian or vegan would fuck a person up, and thanks to this brilliant idea, I might have a shred of proof .

I drank human milk... when I was a baby.
This is not practical. One human woman produces enough milk for, at most, two children at a time. Human babies are tiny things; a single woman would be unable to produce enough milk to meet the demands of a human adult- even though the adult does not depend on milk for basic sustenance like the baby does. In order for cow milk to be replaced by human milk, you would need at the very minimum one milk-producing woman for every customer, and she'd probably need to be pumped full of hormones (just like the cows are) to stimulate production. More realistically, you'd need as many women as it takes to break even with a cow's ability to produce milk- sorry, but I haven't got the numbers on that.
Anybody with a brain ought to see that PETA's latest grand scheme just doesn't work.

Hey guys, let's make it so that one of the duties of cows is no longer in use, and let's use humans for something they're not MEANT to do! Yeah, that works!
Man, I hate PETA.

Because women are meant to mass produce milk for people other than their babies, right?

Cows aren't "meant" to do that either... they just happen to be a hell of a lot better at it than humans are. Cows are large animals, and large animals produce a lot of milk for their comparably large offspring... more than enough to supply milk for several humans per cow.
Now, I'm all for more humane treatment of the cows, because they really are kept in deplorable conditions, but to suggest that we should suddenly stop milking cows is... well, ridiculous. PETA consistently fails to realize and accept that our position at the top of the food chain is not accidental; we are the pinnacle of animal evolution on this planet (at least until something better comes along), and it is only natural that we should be eating and exploiting everything else. That doesn't mean we should be cruel about it, and it certainly doesn't mean we should act with no consideration for the future (i.e. protecting endangered species, preventing the spread of invasive species, etc), but there is no fundamental moral wrongness about the fact that we use other animals for our own ends.

They're "meant" to do it as much as cows are (more, since it is humans consuming it after all). What makes the idea dumb is the scale; there'd have to be thousands of women producing the milk and that's just not feasible.

There's multiple reasons that this is plain stupid.
Obviously, it'd be hard to convince people to change to human milk, but even then, women wouldn't provide enough milk. Now, even assuming these aren't problems, you'd still have to:
Find women willing to do it, milk said women, pay said women...but even then, their milk would be different depending on diet and living conditions ETC, and you can't control what a women eats like you can with cows. Even then, cos you'd be paying said women the price of milk would likely rise substantially.
The only plus side is there will be more jobs for women :S
But, that's not even all the problems with it, there will be many more...it's 5 past 11 pm here and i'm tired yet i thought of this list quickly...shows how stupid and blindly defensive of animals peta are.
This is a signature. Reading this is wasting your time.
