Over $3K(US) in one day. I'm probably one of the luckier ones because I cashed out any 'financials' back last year when the rumblings about the 'sub-prime' crisis began to emerge. Thankfully, I do not need to rely on the markets for retirement, but I feel really, really horribly for the people that do. Who would have thought that companies like Lehman, and Merrill, both of which would have been 'blue chips' only a short time ago would be in such dire straits.

Some people believe that this could be the 'Great Depression' of our generation. Maybe I'm too much of a 'Friedman' for my own good, but we will make it through this, and we will all be better for it. There's always money to be made in situations like this, too.

Edit: Checked with my mutual fund dude. He sounded very, very upset. I'm not looking forward to my next statement. Dont Get It

Well, I'd say it's time to buy stocks again but I already said that often during the last months, so I'm not going to now...

Luckily my stock investments are very low as I'm still very young. Just one investment funds with capital protection and a first payment I made for my retirement plan (40 more years to go, though Razz)...

I pity the people that invested a lot in the financial sector, though...

I haven't even looked at my 401k money. I'm young enough though that I'm not to worried about it.

My boss that finally retired in December had to work an extra 5 years because of the money she lost as a result of September 11.

Excuse my ignorance, but am I right in thinking short selling is where you sell shares you don't own, and then buy them later on at a lower price than what you sold them for?

I don't really understand why it's even allowed in the first place, how can you sell something you don't even own?

Cry me a fucking river. Do you know how much retirement money I have? ZERO. NONE. ZILCH. No 401k. No savings. And I've been paying an interest-only mortgage on my house for years, which means I havn't paid it down a bit. Yeah I'm basically fucked.

Unless you have some ageing parent that's going to leave you a tonne of cash, then yeah. You sound pretty fucked. Not to sound like an ass, but what the hell are you doing supporting renegade when you should be looking closer to home and supporting you and your family first?
I'm not saying you're going hungry now or anything, but further down the road as an aging couple you're looking a bit bleak :-/

I wasn't crying ... I was simply telling a story. Actually it was kinda funny because karma kinda got her on that one. Why would you not be putting money into a 401k? It is pretax so you lose nothing. And besides if that fiance of yours keeps expanding at her current pace you wont have much to worry about pretty soon.

I haven't followed the whole shortselling thing to close but I thought they only stoped it at the corperate level. As an independant person you could still get away with it?

it's harder to do it on your own, requires a lot more guesswork instead of just simply making share prices go down.

You do know that Europe will be in a similar economic boat as America in a short time, with the added bonus of having to buy resources from Russia, hemming yourselves in with an increasingly authoritarian, and aggressive military power.

You do realise that most countrys and businesses within them depend on the American economy to not fuck up, right?

Quite right. The American consumer supports the world's economic chains. When the consumer weakens, so does everyone else.
