It's been on the news lately, about a new piece of legislation that will place severe restrictions on us, and how we listen to music, and watch videos. I was hoping for copyright legislation that was smart, and thought out; instead I see a bill that is severely flawed.
This doesn't just affect people who are filesharing, but people like me, who buy our music, and videos fair and square.
I have a massive music library, and apparently, because I am ripping CD's with 'Digital Locks' I can be fined $500 bucks a pop. I thought I had BOUGHT the music. I also record TV shows using a DVR, but under this impending legislation, I could be in big trouble for doing that too.
Transferring your DVD's to an iPod, PSP, or other portable device will also be an offense, that could see penalties of $20,000! Unlocking a cellphone can meet penalties.
This law affects all Canadians in ways they may never expect, including us who THOUGHT we were being honest.
You can help possibly stop this flawed and moronic piece of legislation, by filling out this form to your local MP.

It's real easy, and quick, and your message might mean the difference real, progressive, and flexible legislation, or dark days where every citizen is a criminal.
If you can, visit your MP's office and tell everyone there that this is idiocy.

This is not just the Conservative government who is supporting it. The Liberal party also has many supporters for this new legislation, including Dan McTeague, who is one of the most vocal supporters for this new legislation. http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/26/copyright-crazies-ga.html
This legislation transcends party lines.

I hear you on that one...Living in Ottawa right now and I wish I could let him know how much he is screwing up right now. This bill isn't the only thing that has me annoyed.

Good thing Dan McTeague is my MP, and he will be hearing at least an email from me.

It's only illegal if you get caught
Seriously though, how can they even hope to enforce these restrictions?
So basically this bill is telling us everything we buy is a license to one copy of the product, and it's completely illegal to port it to an alternate file format or make new copies?
See this is why we need to get rid of all these old dumbass politicians who know nothing about the modern society we live in, everything is being made to make it easier for people to share things and then they have to come up with laws to prevent it...

What pisses me off the most here, is that despite me buying my music legitimately, I'm still lumped into the same crowd as filesharers.
If that's the case, I'm just going to start downloading music. It'll definitely save me a huge chunk of coin. It'll also save me gas money too, since I have to either drive or take the bus to the nearest record store. My God, it'll also save me time! Hell, if I download a thousand bucks worth of music, and pay a five-hundred dollar penalty, it's still a fucking bargain!

This has nothing to do with Canada or Canadian politics. This, pure and simple, is the big US media companies (and the US government via the lobbying efforts of the big US media companies) acting as bullies and pushing to end all the things the big media companies dont like (ripping songs to your MP3 player instead of buying them a second time as a digital download, recording stuff on your PVR instead of watching it live including all the ads or buying it on DVD)
The sad thing is that your government doesn't have the balls to tell the US to go jump (I wonder how much money the big media companies contribute to Canadian GDP and if thats a factor here)

Nope, you just bought the rights to own a copy of the music. If you owned the music, you'd be getting royalties. It's not as semantic as you may think as owning the right to a copy is vastly different to owning the product itself.
I do agree with some things the bill proposes, but overall it is far too much of a reactionary bill (completely coverage of everything so that nothing sneaks through, rather than rational distinctions between would-be crimes).
"Digital Locks" on CD/DVD's: I agree with this proposal. Whatever the reason for the company to secure the phone, it is LOCKED and should be illegal to bypass established security measures. Be it breaking the locks on a house or a CD/DVD. You may own the CD, but not the music on the CD.
Transferring mediums: This is the aspect I don't agree with (so long as you are not breaking a lock to do it - and this does not include the use of programs like windows media player or itunes as it is assumed they have the rights to unlock the CD's). If it is for personal use, the medium it is stored on should not matter as the company has not lost out on any sales. However, I fully support those who transfer mediums to share with others. By this I mean either selling the original or a copy to make a profit or "giving away" a copy of the purchased item.
Giving away your own copy should be fine as it is a simple transfer of ownership that benefits one individual to the loss of another and does not affect the music industry at all. As well.

This is kinda scary, because the industry minister has strong ties to the CRIA, ive been following bill C61 since it was a backbencher bill, and it is obviously sponsored by the CRIA. The funny thing is, the people (song artists) who CRIA is supposed to represent disagree with their methods,
http://www.slyck.com/story1616_Canadian_Association_of_Broadcasters_Attacks_CRIA
The way this works is an MP who is looking to make a little extra money just tries to push a bill through to impress his 2nd employer and I dont think it will actually get through but its the attention that they are after. Right now demonoid's ex-host is still fighting them incourt over filesharing issues, and ofcourse the quebectorrent scandal.
Done, I should have posted this earlier but been busy :/
