Today, I made a cross and stuck it by the memorial. I also saw a few of my school mates on TV last night. It's a shame that he died so early. But I'm mostly concerned about his little brother and how it will affect him.

EDIT: typo

I hope it will teach his little brother to stay away from drugs. In fact, I hope it teaches a lot of people the dangers of marijuana and other drugs. I can see in my head the stoned, drooling idiots who decided that riding on the hood of a car would be a great idea and nothing could possibly go wrong.

It's a shame to see a young life snuffed out like this and I hope at least one person decides not to follow this path that so many young people are following.

Doesn't 10 years of (possible) prison for the driver seem pretty steep? Why should another life be ruined as the result of a dumb stunt that turned tragic?

Jail isn't only punishment, it's to also keep the driver from making the same/similar mistake.

I think what's happened should be punishment enough. If a 17 year-old is sent to prison for 10 years, it's pretty much a guarantee that the rest of his life will be ruined.

Someone has died, and it's awful. But it's not like the driver forced that other teen to stand on top of the car while it was moving. There's shared responsibility in this, and the sentence doesn't seem to fit what happened.

10 years is light. Both of these kids made a stupid decision. One pays an eternity, one pays 10 years. He's lucky he's not the one who was on the hood of the car.

Sucks for the kid who got killed.

I do think 10 years is pretty steep for some dumb stunt, especially when it's not like the driver forced the other kid onto the hood of the car, then purposely crashed into a tree.

It was, in my opinion, the kid on the hood's own fault for climbing on the hood in the first place, especially with weed on and in him.

I could see the driver getting maybe a year or something for not slowing down (whatever legal conflict that would fall in), but 10 years for homicide seems too much.

Well, it's up to a jury to decide the severity of his crime and up to the judge to decide on the actual sentence. Just because he "could" be facing 10 years doesn't mean that's what he'll actually serve.

The driver is always blamed for everything... No one ever seems to want to blame the dead person, even though it's usually primarily their own fault they're dead. Guess they just don't want to sound mean.

A family friend who grew up with my mom and uncle killed his own brother doing that when he was younger.

Wow, that sucks.

In a similar accident, two girls paid dearly for a semi-stupid act.
I didn't know them though.

In Lebanon (Maine) two girls, 13 and 14, were sunbathing on TRAIN TRACKS. They fell asleep and were hit by a train. They each lost one or more of their limbs, and they are VERY lucky to be alive.

The driver has every responsibility to stop the damn vehicle if someone is 'surfing' on the roof. A ten year sentence would be suitable.

Marijuana doesn't make you do stupid things like that, You do, and only you, can do stupid shit.

Unless he snorted like two lines of coke as well as taking Charlie and drinking 5 cans of Carlsberg, then maybe you'll trick yourself into doing it.

btw marijuana can stay in your body for months so they might not have smoked some that night - But I can tell you now I've never met anyone who does silly stunts while stoned.

They were both consenting to the stupid act. The consequence of being the one that caused the death of a friend is way more psychological damage than I think jail could ever do.

I thought it was that it only stayed in certain areas, like in your hair and not in your system? I could be wrong here, of course.

Also interesting that you have never met anyone who does silly stunts while stoned... because EVERY person I have met while they are stoned has acted stupid, be it stunts or just in their talking.

I think it's your kidneys OR saliva glands, Don't quote me on that one though.

I guess that's peer pressure and ass-hats in general.

I mean, most of the people I know who smoke weed now, are usually tech savvy or laid back people who just sit around at friends and do bugger all.
