Would you play Renegade often if you had average FPS 4 ?
I have that, and there is nothing that I can do about it, and it is really Annoiyng. It is strange that at the start, I did not have as much lagg as I have now. Is it because of Gamespy? Could gamespy cause the lagg?
Can you imagine how hard is it to aim with so low FPS? I know that my ADSL connection isn't the best, but at the start, it was enough. I can remember the good old days when I was able to snype.... But now.... anyway, one day something strange happened. I was in server with 4 vs 4 people, and my FPS was 20, and I was finnaly able to snype with sidney quite accuratelly. It was still hard to snype with havoc, but oh well.... Maybe I should join servers that have less people in them? The less people=the less fun Crying or Very Sad

Answers like:
- I have average FPS 40(or more)
- I don't know what is FPS
- I don't care about FPS
- I don't play Renegade
- I hardly ever play Renegade
- Sidney can't snype
are not acceptable, and they will be considered a spam.

I'm running the TNT2, minimam requirements and I still get 20+ FPS no matter where I am. Even 50 in the teleporter room in SS.

If you've had Windows 98 installed for a long time, I found that it deteriorates over use due to more programs installed and poor disk management. Re-installing Windows 98 might help as the defrag tool does do something but you won’t notice a significant difference. I've had A TNT2 Pro with a 1Ghz Athlon, 256MB DDR266 and FPS is still rather poor, especially on the net where more processing power is required. If you ever get any money, I would spend it on another 128MB stick (which is really cheap now) or a better graphics card (Geforce 4MX/Radeon 7500 or below to keep the price down). If you could get either, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, then that would be better as it's built on a more efficient and stable system.

I don't think there's much you can do besides upgrading your Videocard and CPU. I've tried almost everything, but I can't increase my FPS either (I get 6-15 average on 24 player servers).

Oh I'm sure more memory would help.

I know I know, but some time ago, this game was just fine. I had much less lagg than I have now, but it got worse, and I don't know why.

Oh well, no one answered my question... That does not matter anyway....

He is correct. Win98 may be super fast when you first install it but the longer you have it installed, the slower and slower it gets. It has many leaks and such in performance. The cheapest way to help with your problem and speed up your system would be if you could get your hands on a copy of Windows 2000. XP is good also, but it is more intensive and remarkably slower on slower computers. (It ran ok on my 300mhz I had, but it slowed after I got more programs and such on it.) When he says poor disk management, he means exactly that. Win98 doesn't handle files as well as Win2000 or XP as the FAT file system isn't the greatest, and NTFS is more reliable. (Although, several older games may not work on this type of file system... New games of course have no problems). But again, if you could get another 128MB of memory that would also help out alot.
One of my computers is:
800Mhz AMD Cpu
Windows 2000 OS
256MB SDRAM
NVidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64 (64MB)

And I averaged about 40-45FPS on Renegade... That is almost the same specs as yours except I have 2000 and 128mb more memory. So it seems to me that in your case, the operating system my be dragging you down. A word of advice though; If you do decide to upgrade to Win2000, make sure your hardware is supported and you have updated drivers for everything, otherwise it would make for a long and painful upgrade.

Sorry for the novel... lol

WOW!!!
I guess that you are right, win 98 gets slower in time.... Since I don't have money to upgrade, the only thing that I can do is to re-install win 98, and when I will earn some money, I wil buy the "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Full Upgrade" ........

Thanks for the help..... I guess that my problem is not the video card, or the RAM (I think that 128MB RAM is enough for Renegade). One last question: Why does this happen only to win 98? What about other ones? 95, 3.11, ME..... (many people say the ME sucks balls so don't worry about it)

ME is crap. It isn't stable at all, and you thought 98 had leaks. It also develops random "features" the longer you have it installed. My older sister had it on her Gateway computer she purchased. It didn't take long before she had me blow it away and put a fresh install of Windows 2000. 95 and 98 are much of the same. They both have this problem, the only difference between the two are some new features from 95 to 98 and some security fixes... but I believe the main reason why these two deminish in performance in time is because the FAT file system. It's just not as reliable as NTFS. Of course, everyone has their opinions, but I believe Windows 2000 is the best all around system you can get for slower (300mhz-900mhz) PCs. XP is great for faster computers also. Win98 was the best for gaming, because almost any game worked on it... unfortunately like we've been saying, you have to reinstall again and again to keep it running smooth. Sad but true...
