I used to have the Logitech MX-1000 wireless laser mouse (I had two), but after 1.5 years with each, the middle button stopped responding. Now I have a Logitech G5, but my desk's kinda cluttered, so it's a bit harder to use with the wire. Also, when I'm playing, sometimes Renegade thinks I'm still holding the left button when I'm not, and that gets annoying. I dunno why a USB-only mouse would work worse than a USB mouse that can use a USB-to-PS2 adapter. Otherwise, it's great.

Does the middle scroll wheel work as a middle button as well, where you push down?

The scroll has a clutch so depending on what you are doing the scroll because friction free to stiff. I can literally make it from the top of #n00bsvr01 to the bottom in one pull of the wheel. The wheel pushes down and also left and right. All the buttons are also fully customizible.

Also, the range on it is stupid long. The battery last forever and I have never once even hit a nanosecond of lag from it. I think the only negative thing I can say about it is that it takes some getting used to at first.

I'm still using the same 5-button MS optical mouse that I've had for 7 or 8 years now- an older variant of this, actually, but in white. The thing is covered in a very durable second skin of grunge buildup from all that use. The wheel started to go a while back, but regularly cleaning the inside seems to be keeping the multiclick fuckups to a minimum (I've learned to be cautious around things that are middle-clickable, like browser tabs). Unfortunately, it seems I'm going to have to buy a new one soon, and I might just get two so that I won't be left dangling years down the road when I need another replacement and nobody's selling them anymore. I have a few of the more basic 3-button Intellimouse opticals lying around that are even older but not as worn out; I suppose I'll fall back on those if I ever run out of other options. I've been using the same mouse for so damn long that my hand just flat out refuses to be comfortable handling anything else; when I can't get an identical or similar product anymore I'll probably start going Frankenstein on the things rather than adapt to something new.

I bitch and moan a lot about MS, but they used to make some good quality hardware- my old Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick is still working, too, and that thing's pushing its 13th birthday. I don't like the too small/too big/over-designed/ambidextrous/cordless shit they're putting out these days though. Especially cordless- I can't stand cordless. I don't give a shit if it's the way of the future, or if it's better or whatever else, if it doesn't have a cord, it doesn't go on my desk. I'm a bit of a backwards, stubborn prick about that. Seriously. Give me cord or give me death.

I'm I understanding this right, you are saying that the scroll button works as 5 button unit, like, forward, back, down, left and right, if so that is awesome.

Why are any of these fancy mice better than standard mice with a left click, right click and scroll wheel, apart from being able to scroll left and right? I can't even see THAT being useful, except when browsing web pages too large for your monitor, where you have to scroll right to view more of an image or something. But from the sounds of it, you guys with these fancy mice are loaded, and have probably been able to afford large monitors as well.

I've been using a standard white microsoft mouse for YEARS with no problems. The scroll wheel is useful when gaming to scroll between weapons and reload when clicked down.

standard, cheap, reliable microsoft mouse for the win.

Having at least two additional buttons is good for gaming- it lets you put two more commands with your shooting hand, which is more efficient than having a whole mess of non-movement commands tied to your movement hand when you need to be, well, moving. Those same additional buttons typically default to the forward/back commands in your browser, which makes that more streamlined as well. There are also some mice that have a little control which can increase or decrease sensitivity on the fly- which is also a plus in gaming, since you can jack the sensitivity up much higher when you need quicker reflexes and back down for greater control.

In other words, most extra controls are of marginal use unless you do a lot of gaming, in which case a few extras can be very handy indeed.

There is, however- IMHO, anyway- a point at which the number of available buttons exceeds the number of useful commands, and for me that point (on a mouse, anyway) is usually reached when I have more buttons than fingers, as I prefer to keep finger movement to a minimum. That, and my hand's preferred chariot has 5 buttons, and I'd never dream of forcing my poor hand to change its ways. Smile

You understand perfectly.

It also has a thumb wheel (forward, backward and down), a button right infront of the scroll wheel and two more buttons above the thumb wheel.

This is the best mouse ever spawned. I am using an 8 year old one right now and have recomended it to several friends who built computers recently and they love them. You don't need anything more than this. Forward, Back, Left and Right click and a scroll wheel. Anything else is madness.

I think mine can do sideways scrolling if you click the scroll wheel down and then move the mouse sideways. Smile

They aren't.You won't be a better gamer by using a mouse with more features.

I for myself like to keep it simple: A good optical mouse with left, right and a wheel. Of course, I often make use of the comfy "turbo-scroll" feature by pressing the wheel (picture down here) but that's it. I "only" have 1600dpi and don't need anything higher.

I'm gonna go ahead and venture here, I'm gonna say that any seriously hardcore gamer will agree that the "fancier" mice, or mice with more features is at least a small help in increasing the skill or effectiveness of their gameplay. A mouse that has something as simple as an extra button for example can help a gamer shave parts of seconds off performing a function that would otherwise need to be done with the keyboard, requiring movements of hands beyond standard WASD setting. Again, just an example, won't always happen that way, but it could, and a hardcore gamer wouldn't wanna take that chance.

Note: let's just define a "hardcore gamer" as one who plays games almost for a living, someone to whom games are EVERYTHING.

Today the right button on my mouse started to be gay and not be as smooth and easy to click as it used to be, still works, but I gotta click it harder then before, which is annoying when before just a light touch was needed.

So new mouse time, what mouses do you guys use and would recommend? Smile

I have my eye on these two so far.

The MX518, hands down. $40 for a 1600dpi mouse, get a decent mousepad and you're good to go. Can't get a much better deal than that.

I have one too, it's great. However I got a free MX518 with my laptop and have been using that recently now instead of the MX1000. The 1000 only has 800dpi where as the 518 can toggle between 800dpi and 1600dpi

I should think that comfort would be more important than feature count; a comfortable mouse quickly becomes an extension of your hand. You no longer have to pay any attention to it, so it disappears. Then the only limitation on the system is your performance.

Speaking of gamer-friendly input devices, I'm somewhat surprised there isn't a high-end concave keyboard for gamers- something that conforms to natural twisting of the wrist for easy one-handed control of the entire keyboard- like the reverse of the curved ergonomic typist's keyboards that seem to be all over the place. I doubt very much that I'd pay out for one, since I do a lot of typing as well as gaming, but it is odd that nobody's made one yet. Unless they have and I just haven't seen it.

Ball mice are garbage. Optical mice are now cheap enough that there should be no reason for anyone to buy a ball mouse anymore (unless they have a special need such as a really old PC that cant use optical mice or are using the mouse on a wierd surface where optical mice just wont work)

Laser mice on the other hand are overkill for most people IMO.

As long as the mouse is durable and the buttons sound sharp, I am all for it. A basic optical mouse these days is enough but not sure for newer games where it may help if you can re-configure the buttons to help you out in-game.
