if canada's anything like britain, every student lives in unenviable accommodation - the cool thing is the student lifestyle teaches you as much about economy management than your course will teach you about whatever you're studying.

so calling a student "poor" is just... dense.

OSAP only gives the students *just* enough to support them during the school year, nothing extra. Most student have the part time jobs in order to go out, even pay for about 25%-50% of living (includes food, gas, etc). Basically it is, the government is helping oyu half way, but it is upto yourself to get all the way.

Come to think of it. Since when are college scholars and such ever right about anything that happens in the real world?

Although being generally conservative, I am a proponent of free post-secondary education (providing the student attains proper grades, etc). My country pisses away so much cash into stupid ventures that would be better spent on future workforces. It might even lead to governments that don't suck.

I've found that students who take out government loans, work part-time, etc. to pay for their schooling are much better employees at my workplace. As well, I manage a couple apartment buildings, and they also make for better tenants. I think the lack of 'sheltering' is the reason, as they had to learn how to use their heads, and are much more in touch with the real world.

In Belgium, post graduate education costs the parents about 500 € per year inscription money if you odn't have any post graduate degrees yet. The rest is sponsored by the government.

On top of this you can get scholarship to cover most surrounding costs, like books, transport, ...

I think it's a good system to give everyone a fair chance at getting a degree.

That student like means "money management". That is true in the US (most of the time), since tuition is about $20,000/year, but everywhere else (I dont know about UK) it is reasonable, here in canada its only about $6,000.

But the osap thing greg is talking about, that only applies to low income families who already are listed on a government assistance plan so...

OSAP is retarded. My girlfriend had to use it this year, it paid for her school and books but part of the agreement of taking OSAP (in her case) was the amount of money she could make during the school year. It ended up causing more problems than it was worth. Her living conditions changed early on and that may have been the problem. Anyways, college is pretty cheap here and most people can afford it as long as they're living at home.

Check the OSAP website for "conditions to apply". I had aa seminar on it, and was told it was for families with kids going to college/uni that made under X ammount/year, or something like that. For tuition fee's, im strictly talking tuition. Board makes it 2x, but even Canada's top school's (queens, macgill, etc) are under $7,500/year.

I know what the system is, and it's bullshit. Not all conditions have to be met Wink .. i've been threw it already, and didn't go back for my last 2 years of schooling on OSAP...

What you have been told, and what I have done seem to be totally two different things...

Im just going offer their website, under "conditions to apply". Either way, tuition is no way $30,000/year for a single uni in Canada. I'll easily put money on that, Ive looked around.

Try looking at double majoring. It does apply as one in that case Wink

Best of luck in Criminology, but it might be useful to figure out what law school is before you start telling people you attend it.

Also, please stop bragging about things your parents have bought you. My parents have money too; one of the things that you will hopefully figure out at school is that no one gives a shit how rich daddy is, and going on about it makes you seem like a giant fag.

Finally, since you weren't satisfied with my response of "collage," let me say this:
- I am not poor.
- Yeah I lived in a shithole. The student ghetto at Queen's University is extremely run down. This is not my personal problem; anyway, it means that you can fuck around and not worry about damaging the beautiful house mommy and daddy bought.
- I am no longer a student as I've just graduated.
- Oh no, you said I'm ugly Sad

Enjoy Ottawa U. With any luck you'll grow up a bit.

EDIT: As far as tuition is concerned, at Queen's my tuition was about $8000 this year, but I was in Engineering. I think tuition for an art sci student was more like $4500.

I got a scholorship so im saving money in that sense, I only had a job when it was winter (snowboarding), nor do I need one. OttawaU isn't cheap, but im not doing a double major. Just need to get good grades to try for LSAT'S in 3rd year to get accepted to law school, $60,000 starting salary first year out.

I dunno about that $60,000 starting figure... but even then, the work required is grueling. Being a legal assistant, and essentially being a go-for for another lawyer is not the easiest job out there. I used to have a couple tenants that came out with a law degree, and half the time they didn't use their suites because they were always out at night researching cases. Huh

I don't plan to work too much, I already have some pretty cool connections to people who run their own firms, so I already basically have a job the second I finish school (and a reserved spot for my apprenticeship in 3rd year). And with most canadian firms, base salary is $60,000/year based on certain requirements, but either way ive already looked into all of this.

apprenticeships are rare now, there like gold dust, and only contracted builder firms do them now (plumbing, plastering etc)

it's not very common for other places to do them.

I think the dole should only be allowed to those who cannot physically work. Why should I pay for someone else's wellbeing?

Maybe because some people can't get a job? And they still need money to survive, so if they can't get money legally they will acquire it illegally, through murdering you and stealing your belongings for example.

The idea behind social welfare is to make sure the poor stay out of crime. In Netherland this isn't needed because the jails are 3-star hotels and jail time is really low.

Haha, you're lying or just really stop if you think you aren't gonna work. And $60.000/year isn't much with the salary you can get if you graduate on anything economics or science related from college.

Yeah, $60000 is a bit of a rubbish starting salary if you're gonna go through undergrad and then law school (and let's not get ahead of ourselves here considering you're 17 and don't know your ass from a hole in the ground). Although being a lawyer would be appropriate since everyone already hates you anyway.
