Someone said this in college today, and I had to totally agree with them. Dispite the fact that being on the dole isn't good for society.
When you're on the dole, everything is paid for. You get a house, food and could probably run a small car.
When you have a job, even though you're earning money. You spend about 8 hours a day earning that money and it's not easy. You have to pay for: food, bills, your house (mortgage), your car (to get to work) and everything is taxed. The government takes all your money away from you and you're struggling to pay for essentials.
While you're struggling, the people on the dole are doing jack all have no worries. So what's better? Living on the couch, going out for a drink with some freinds? or working 8 hours a day and worrying about money all the time.

our benefits system is just disgraceful tbh... but then our entire economic policy is downright absurd.

there's housing benefits you can claim.
you wouldn't be able to afford to run a car these days though, I expect... unless my description of the benefits system was an understatement, which it quite likely is.

If you already have a flat and then you go on the dole the government will pay the rent otherwise you'd be homeless wouldn't you...And thats just what we need more homeless people. Anyone can apply for a flat but if you're not missing both legs and an arm you will be put on a waiting list which I think is 5 years..
Please do not try and make living on the dole seem like its great because its not. I was much better off when I was working. Atleast then i'd have money to have a few drinks with the lads.

Plus being ugly doesn't help your cause. Meanwhile I just got my first car, 2001 mercedes-benz C220 ($37,000), n_P.

renalpha wrote on Thu, 22 May 2008 07:47 | Some people simply are not able to get work.
And there is still a lot discrimination and racism going on in the world.
For example
when a white guy just like most of us sollicitate for a job and a Arabian or Black guy goes for the job.
They will interview the white guy first, after that the black.
Lately the arabian are getting discriminated like mad.
|
In England, it's the other way around. There are no end of examples of white people being turned down for jobs specifically because they're white.
still, anyone who physically can't get a job at tesco or asda etc is frankly a sorry individual.

Troop, you live in Canada, so your opinion on this subject is null and void
However, your opinion on the topic we all keep linking to would be appreciated...
As for the topic, I dislike the government in general, so anything I say is biased.

In Canada, we essentially have two forms of the 'Dole' : 'Welfare, and 'Employment Insurance' .
'Welfare' or a 'Living Allowance' is pretty much the same thing as the 'Dole' , and is a Provincial jurisdiction.
Employment Insurance is the one I like. With 'EI' , as soon as someone gets a job, and is on the payroll, a portion of their weekly, or bi-weekly earnings is sent into a massive fund.
When the person loses their job, they get put on EI. Because they have paid into the fund, the money they receive can equal their previous salary, or be a major percentage of what they previously earned. EI lasts for a relatively short time, but enough for someone to find a new job. Once they are back in the workforce, they automatically begin paying into EI again.
From what I've seen, EI seems to work very nicely, in that the person is much more motivated to find a new job, because the EI payments will run out in a short time. Life on Welfare is comparatively 'dumpy' , but many people just seem to 'adjust' to it, and know that until the day they die, they'll be getting the same cheque from the government.
As our friend Caveman has said, he really can't afford to have a pint with the lads, and that just makes life boring, which in turn can make the person unmotivated to pull themselves out of the rut. With EI, a person will be able to run their vehicle to get around and go for interviews, buy decent food, and still be able to have a beer with the boys.
For what it's worth, our federal governement has not paid into the EI program since 1990.
Lastly, trooprm02 has no idea what depreciation is, nor does he even know what car he's driving. The 2001 C220 is NOT sold in Canada because it is a CDI. It's likely a C240, and if that's what it is, it's bluebooked for about 12-16K depending on mileage and features. If troop's parents DID pay $37,000 for an seven to eight year old Benz, It'll prove to me that stupidity is indeed hereditary.
