For a basic video compression use Windows Movie Maker...My dog could probably make an encode with it its that easy.

Windows Movie Maker 6 is included in Vista.
EDIT:
Sometimes, you can't find it through the start menu though I know it should be right there. If it's not showing, then do a search and find it. Then put a shortcut in the desktop.

strangely enough i typed windows movie maker and clicked search everywhere and cant find it...cant find links in my start menu bar nothing at all

How strange indeed. Now I am at home at my Vista rig...see if these screens help you at all.
Windows Movie Maker should be right here:
If not, then type in the Search bar and it should show up:
Also, which version of Vista do you have? I have Ultimate.
EDIT:
Please tell me what version of Vista you own. I think Windows Movie Maker IS NOT included in Windows Vista Starter.
