The service pack fixes quite a lot of problems, but Windows Vista is still in a Release Candidate state in my opinion.

The time it takes to copy files in Vista is due to the graphical effects the Windows team wanted in Vista. They could EASILY make the transfers almost instant, but they want to the user to be able to look at their fancy progress bar while it copies. Not only could they increase the internal buffer, but decrease the number of UI updates per second, and efficiently decrease transfer times. But noooooo... they want you to look at a pretty looking window while it copies.. morons.

For some reason it increases the startup time for my PC and it also doesn't fix the file copying/deleting shit. I heard they were making a fix for SP1... (a fix for a fix anyone?)

As for Vista, Micisoft is going to extend the Windows XP Home selling period due till 2010.
Not because Vista was such a hit, but because there is to much pc's like EEEPC and UMPC which are sold with Linux.

Vista Service Pack 1 installed fine on my PC and didn't break anything. I didn't really notice any performance increase, but that may be because I had already installed most of the existing performance fixes from Windows Update that were basically little bits of SP1 that Microsoft released early. I do think file copying is faster now than it was when Vista was first released, and as previously mentioned, the progress bars are not as indicative of copy speed as you might think.
PS: If you REALLY want to speed up Vista's file copy a bit go into Device Manager, right click on each of your Disk Drives (might only work on SATA, not sure) and tick Enable Advanced Performance on the Policies tab. This will increase the cache size for the disk and make transfers and such appear faster, but at the cost of potentially losing data in the event of a power cut. Your choice.

SP1 fixed Volume shadow copy issues so that System restore would work properly again. It also broke hibernation for me, but I was able to fix it with a simple bootmanager edit. Also, the file copy countdown timer seems to work more accurately now.
Aside from that, I haven't noticed too much of a difference in performance.
