Okay they aren't SHUTTING DOWN, but the Space Shuttle program is indeed ending in 2010, and NASA will be cutting ~8,000 jobs, and at some facilities almost 90 percent of the employees.
There is a replacement for the shuttle planned, the "Constellation", but it won't begin until 2015. I wonder why the 5 year gap? I think ending the shuttle program for 5 years will be seen as abandoning the space program.
From my experience there are 3 types of people in regards to space exploration:
1. We don't belong in space "If God wanted us to fly he would have given us wings"
2. Exploring space is absolutely necessary, both for the spirit of humanity and to expand the human civilization to other plants (Mars, etc).
3. It doesn't really matter because humans are not capable of advancing enough to escape the solar system before our sun turns into a Red Giant...we are all doomed anyway even if we colonize mars (granted this wont happen for a long long time, but it WILL happen).
Which are you?

Well clearly they'll need five years to build the replacement. Don't you know how big those things are?

I disagree with this as we got a few billion or so years left, I'm 100% sure we will have found a way to save our sun from dying.

Around 8,000 jobs?! Diaper sales are going to skyrocket...
The 5 year gap is likely for budgetary reasons - keeping costs minimal and allowing NASA to focus solely on the new space vehicle.
The United States would in NO WAY give up the Space Program, because it provides such a strategic advantage against competitors like China, Russia, and Japan.

I'm definitely in the second category- I'd go as far as to say that, were it possible, I'd be perfectly willing to relocate to Mars or wherever our first extraterrestrial colony is established. The way I see it, there are only two frontiers open to human exploration: space and the depths of the oceans. I would love nothing more than to see humans living on another world within my lifetime.

I'm all for the colonization of Mars.
It's the perfect place to rocket Al Gore, and all those other enviro-assholes, especially that nosey chick who had the testicular fortitude to give me a phony 'ticket' for owning a vehicle that had a six liter engine.
It'd also make an awesome garbage dump too.

Blazer you lamo....I am for #3 I think.
I think that we have done all we can in space really. I mean we went into space, made a telescope, and went to the mood several times, we have also sent out probes and other things out into space including a Mars mission. So what in space is there left to do?
Blazer wrote on Wed, 02 April 2008 16:08 | TBH I would live on mars, as long as they had internet - LOL. Seriously though I probably would, as I'm not the type of person that goes to "the mall" every week etc. I spend most of my time indoors, and most of my free time at my PC. That's probably "sad" by some standards, but ideal for living on another planet where the atmosphere is toxic Of course Crimmy would have to want to come with me
