Ok I absolutely hate Windows media player (prefer VLC), and changing what program opens AVI files won't work, and so I attempted to rename the WMP to WMPBACK, and rename the VLC folder to Windows Media player, and then rename the executable of course.

Access is denied. Program is still in use

I whipped out Process explorer, and disabled everything in sight. Still not working.

So then I tried copying all of the vlc files into the WMP folder. Worked. Then I tried renaming the executables. But before I can rename VLC.exe to WMplayer.exe WMplayer.exe re-appears in-front of my eyes!
So I created a batch file to do it, and it also made vlc write-protect after It was renamed.
Worked!
Opened it up...WMP appears!. In the folder the WMplayer.exe icon changes back to its original and renames the VLC replacement to WMplayer.exe.tmp !
What has MicroCrap done to make WMP indestructible? Are they pulling an April fools on me?

Windows Media player is actually a Windows Component. Like Internet Exploder, it will always exist in some shape or form on your computer. To remove it of being a nuisance to your user experience, go to the Control Panel, open up the Add/Remove Programs list, click on Add/Remove Windows Components, and un-check Windows Media Player, then complete the Wizard.

wmp.dll is the component and msdxm.ocx is the old style media player. Why don't you just set your associations so everything will open in VLC? I prefer Media Player Classic (MPC is not made by Microsoft so its actually good) over all but keep VLC as a backup.

I still have Windows Media Player but it hasn't even been ran once...this shouldn't be a problem.

Replacing the WMP folder with a VLC copy will not work and removing wmp.dll with just fubar windows. You can use unlocker to try it but you've been warned.

BTW, Unlocker should of been installed day one.

Unlocker is a great program, but don't use it on everything, otherwise you will suffer the consiquences! (of messing around with Windows Files :V)

I don't know if you already tried the following:
(note that its translated from a dutch win xp so the names might be slightly different)

Start->
Settings->
Config Panel->
Map Options->
File Types tab->
.Avi-> VLC

or

.Avi-> Delete
New-> .Avi-> VLC

I already tried making VLC the default to open .avi but windows refuses to open the files with VLC.

Ty, I didn't know it was a windows component.

Try some codecs? Maybe VLC is so shite that it doesn't have the basic codec to play .avi files?

Or it might be that windows can't open VLC when it's told to. I get this with my copy of Delphi, if I double click a *.dpr file in Explorer, the IDE starts but crashes.

VLC doesn't use direct show so it's completely codec free.

@Dthdealer That means your not doing it correctly.
