No small mods or non-conversion mods as they don't really need it. They wouldn't be able to do much with it as their mod requires the game, and if they privatly patch it, it won't work with the game anymore.

STAND DOWN!

Its the small mods that keep the game alive, people would just leave renegade and forget about it if they only waited for the "Large Mods" to release (ie APB, Reborn, ect.

BHS, Blackintel and people like WD should have access to it, but that's about it. Could still maintain some scripts.dll type thing to the public, but add support for more things.

"Normal" Renegade is buggy and still a tad incomplete. There were quite a few maps that were still meant to be made (Snow, sand, etc...), various special powerups (Tiberium immunity powerup, stealth suit, ammo increaser, etc), mannable guns, a mutant team (Presumably an infantry-only kinda sub-team, but yeah), and quite a bit more.

So it'd be nice if someone could get the source code and make an official patch for Renegade to add in all these things. Things like that should be entrusted to the people at like, black hand studios. Though of course, many mods that seek to increase Renegade's possibilities (APB, Reborn, AR, Rp2) should also be given the source code.

It definetly shouldn't be a huge public thing, as that would be incredibly annoying to see alot of cheating and hacking going on.

It is funny because it is stil a rumor I havent really seen anything of a 'word of EA' that they even would release it.

And if EA does it they will release it their way. (probably full open on the site)

Bring the word first that those rumors are based on something EA said.

(could be that I missed something duno)

if EA were to release it to a responsible group who used it wisely, it'd be exactly what Renegade needs - as long as it was used to deal with cheaters, stuff like bluescreening etc, not to actually change the way the game is played.

open release to anyone would probably be a disaster though

Open release = Ren's death.

Release to BHS/BI = win.

QFT. If I were to ever be a part of a group working with Renegade source, I would push for what's most important to me (and to, I believe, the majority of the community), which is to keep the gameplay almost identical to what we're used to and fix the stupid problems that get in the way of a good game, things like netcode/lag, blue hell, vehicle theft, and of course, cheating. To be honest, I don't see a reason to even have RenGuard anymore if there was a source code + access to release official patches.

If I were a part of such a group, I would also do my best to make sure that we worked in conjunction with mod teams to get them what they want without actually having to share the code with them and increase the possibility of a devastating leak.

Being able to release updates would at this moment be more useful than the source would be.

A public release would be horrible due to cheats being made... I hope that doesn't happen. A private release would be ok imo, although only if they would be able to send out updates as well. Doubt it would happen though...

If the source code does somehow magically get released there are only two things I would want done:

-Improve the W3D engine's handling of textures.

-Fix blue hell and the other weird physics glitches.

It'd be pretty cool if you could add some more engine features to w3d too. Not neccisarily things included in existing maps, just more flexability to future/current mods.

That's just selfish. Why should you get it and not us?

Because you haven't released anything. You may say the same about RA2:AR but since we are camping with APB, we are set.

RA2:AR is in the comfortable position of being the middle child in the TC mod world. APB being the older child, who looks down on the attention seeking Reborn (the youngest child).

(Nothing of this has to do with the mod's physical age though. It's just a metaphor).

If I were dishing out the code I'd give it to RP2, since their mod is a total conversion in my eyes (but just not standalone). I've heard a bit about RenHalo, but it seems to be all talk and not much stuff being shown (aside from a modified APB ranger that was shown a while back).

Plus, there is nothing stopping you from using the modified engine builds minus the source code when new iterations are produced.

If anything, it's to be distributed to select persons only.

IE: The BHP team, Reborn team, etc.

No small mods or non-conversion mods as they don't really need it. They wouldn't be able to do much with it as their mod requires the game, and if they privatly patch it, it won't work with the game anymore.

Total conversion, yes, as they can fix A LOT of things in their releases (as they're standalone).

I voted no, because there wasn't a "To select persons only" option... >.>

Fuck you.

What are you talking about? Roleplay2 is a total conversion, is it not?

Rp2 is not a total conversion, we decided to keep it as a PKG mod because that way more people will be able to see our mod being played along with the Ren servers and download it. Not all Ren players are involved in the community.

Regardless, if the source was released to smaller (but equally talented if not moreso) mod teams like ours, we could still make quite a lot of use in implementing new scripts etc. Zion Fox's snobby elitist opinion about this matter really pisses me off.

You're missing the point here.

Remember that game patches are required by ALL players, so if you patch the game and do whatever to it, EVERYONE who wants to play on that server will need said patch, and i don't know about you but i'm not installing two versions of Renegade just to play RP2.

Read, before you comment, in future.

Um, so if EA is planning to release it "sometime soon" which they probably will/might (according to a EA employee himself), couldn't someone contact EA (crimson?) and ask them about this matter (privately is thats the only way they will say anything), to ask if they really plan on doing what they eluded too, and if so, could it be only released to certain people? (BHS, BI, etc)

Because they might magically release it, they have no idea about this thread and they couldn't care less what happens as a result of it so..say something before they do something stupid.

The problem with that is, if I did in fact know something and/or was involved in it, EA wouldn't allow me to tell the "public" about it anyway, and I'd have to keep it a secret and pretend I didn't know anything about it and only speak in hypothetical.

Quite a dilemma, no?

You're missing the point. There isn't much in RA and RA2 that can't be accomplished in Renegade with scripts easily. When you look at E:BFD you will noticed 3 sides, and sub sides. Thumbs Up

I think the scripts should be only released for RENEGADE related stuff like patches and such instead of conversion mods to make ren look like other games. :/

Thanks for the hint Wink No, but really, an EA employee with strong ties to the C&C side of EA, said it would happen "soon" (inside ties, n_P) thats why im worried...

I assure you there is no public release planned. If our community was about 10 times larger with 10 times more skilled coders, we could probably survive a public release and beat the cheat creators down with more effort, but we don't, and they understand that.

I love the idea of releasing it to BHS. A responsible and long standing group like that could do a great job of relegating it with mod teams and such.

How can you be sure? No offense, but the guy works for EA, it was the same person who is "intresting" (acting to be I think, tbh) in the development of ren2k7 who said something along the lines of releasing the source code when the other C&C stuff cools off, and something similiar was even said by him on their own forums, thats why I thought this entire topic started, because people started hearing about this... Huh
