These sorts of attacks, along with reading info from windows swapfiles, have been around for over a decade. They are just now becoming "public knowledge".

Other stuff that is used by the govt everyday, like Van Eck phreaking, are still unknown by most people, even though it is mentioned in movies and tv shows from time to time.
