That's where my "second" core came from...
I was wondering the same thing when I found out what was making my Red Alert 1 crash (This no-longer-mysterious second CPU) and how to fix it.

Apperantly MicroSoft isn't THAT bad if you're using their products then. I think everyone in this thread with an opinion neads a nice tall glass of STFU.

Due to the complexity behind the manufacturing of the cell processor, IBM reserves the majority of 8 core chips for medical (not F@H) purposes. Sony actually accepts every cell with a minimum of 4 working cores.
It doesn't really matter how many cores your PS3 has, because it will always be bottlenecked by the mere 256 Megabytes of memory.
