Hey, all, i'm new to renegade online, although i've been playing renegade offline for a while now.
I installed gamespy but there were rarely people in the rooms there and i didn't manage to join a game. Are there specific times i should join and play, or should i not be using gamespy?

Any tips are appreciated Smile

lots of people connect using other means, like renip or wol which is now known as xwis i believe and there are probably a few more programs that i didnt mention. so although you will not see many in the lobby (if at all) they will be in the servers when you join. another thing to keep in mind is that gamespy will only show you player count of people that use gamespy to connect to the server. people that use other means will not be detected so even though gayspy will say for example that there are 20/28 players in the server that particular server might actually be full. most servers are named after a community that is looking after it, since all the servers are now private and actually belong to somebody that is not westwood or ea. so you could try joining the community or browse their forums to get the ip addresses of their servers which you can then use to connect to them.

Getting online is easy.

-Open up Renegade
-Go to Internet Multiplayer
-Go to westwood online, advanced listings
-Create a WOL account (Just type in a name and an 8-character password)
-Connect to a server
-Download Roleplay 2 Mod

Well, the easiest way is to use WOL (XWIS)

Simply start Renegade, click "Multiplayer," than click "Westwood Online."

After you get in the "Start Game" menu, click on "Advanced Game listings"

You will get a popup asking you to log in. This is what I like about XWIS. You simply put in a name you would like to use, and put in a password. If the name is free, than it is yours to keep forever! No email registration or anything. Just make a name and play.

600-800 online at once at various times, a total of about 10,000-15,000 people still play in total.

Thanks for all of your instuction, and i hope to see a few of you in game =]
A few problems, when i click the 'new account' link, i get a 'page is invalid or unable to load' error message, and if i put any username or password into the login box, the lobby shows a 'no servers found at this time' message. Could this possibly be because of my firewall or something similar?

You are just supposed to make a name. No need to go to that page and make a new one, it won't work.

All you need to do is click on Advanced Game Listings and set up a name and password then click log in. You should get a message from Xwis, then you can log in.

If you aren't getting any servers, you should read what that message says before you close it. It will tell you why you don't see the servers.

I'd say there is 500 people playing online constantly, most servers are empty, but you can find big servers like jelly server and such full, gamespy will only show around 50-100 people on, plus gamespy never works, half the time it shows your favorite server is down, when it really isnt.

Anyway...

On topic: I wouldn't know exactly how many are online because I don't read the MOTD put up by XWIS. Also, I only play in very few servers. (e.g. BC, n00bless, EKT)
