I've always wondered how can so many christians place so much faith in a mystical man that lived 2000 years ago? What if jesus was just the greatest magician ever? I wouldn't think it to be too hard to trick and confuse people back then. People mistaked ordinary things for godly occurences all the time.

He was hung on a cross for days until he died.

He was later disposed of, and came back to life.

Back then? How do you know people mistaked "ordinary things" for "godly occurences"? The whole "Big Bang Theorey" is not an ordinary thing. Nor is the creation of life, on one planet, out of many.

We know because recorded history tells us that the ancients had a "god" for pretty much everything. The sun god, moon god, sea god, thunder god, lightning god...I can go on for days. Pretty much everything "ordinary" were seen as "godly occurences."

We as a human race, even now, are discovering new things around us.

We don't know for sure if this is the only planet with life.

You also believe that your father is your father without a DNA test, don't you?

Same case.

I am a Christian, though I must say that this is a bad anology if you're a Christian, too.

If you meant it as a "He could very well not exist, because you have no conclusive evidence to prove it", then nevermind it being a bad anology.

As for Jesus, it just seems too unlikely that he's a completely made up person. Whether he's the "son of God" and all that is up for debate I suppose, but I do beleive that a pretty much perfect person had once lived amongst us, and was persecuted for it.

Even in todays society, perfection is unattainable through human form. Everyone knows this, even though some people wish to beleive that's not true, they still know it.

Humanity has a habit of hating people better than them.

What I mean is that there's faith. In one case there's faith in your father, a human person; in the other case there's faith in God, not a human person.

I believe my father is my father because he told me he is my father. God never told me he is god.

My father never told me that. Although it's possible he did when I was a baby in which case I don't remember it. Perhaps God did the same.

I beg to differ.

Humans have always wanted a purpose in and for their lives. If you think outside of it (like me) for instance, the outlook looks pretty bleak...you die and all that you lived for means nothing: all those clothes, houses, cars, jobs, passions, ambitions, and loved ones mean nothing but sh*t.

Humans have over centuries always found a "purpose" for their lives to explain the emptiness they feel. This is why religion was and is present throught history. From the Harappans to the Egyptians to the Mesopotamians and so on...all had religion embedded within their cultures.

I have talked to many religious people who say that that ability of humans to think of a "greater being" was "wired" into us by "God." This is a mistaken assumption that ignores history, science, and culture.

Just as Jesus and Mohammad are the "big guys" today, there was a time when Horus, Zeus, Athena and all the gods upon gods ever invented were a dominant part of their respective societies.

My laughs are saved for those who claim to know which god is "real" because recored history gives a much clear and more honest picture. People must understand that the human mind is weak...it is perhaps a flaw that comes with a highly evolved ability to reason.

People seriously should think critically about the issue and look for other sources of reliable information IF they are ever in doubt.

Which is why I unconditionally agreed with Muad's statements below. It makes perfect sense, fully logical and compliments recorded human history which everyone is very happy to ignore.

Muad Dib15 wrote on Thu, 24 January 2008 12:49

Who cares if man is flawed and needs false hope. Me, i couldn't live without religion because, then I would feel that my life is worthless and there really is no point to living. Because I really don't think that humans should live just to die 80 years later. What is the point? That is why I belive that there is something up there after we die, just waiting for us. Scientists say that what makes us different from other beings is that we can reason. That may be so, but what if the real reason we are different from animals is that we have a code set down by us that says that we must do this, this, and this, and not this to go someplace better.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to think that there is someplace better than this sin ridden world. And that is why I believe in Christ. Even if it is a false hope, I'd rather think and hope that, than to know that there really is no point to me and my existance being here.

simply they believe it due to faith...

Personally I wish my mind wasn't so science driven so I could believe in the after life and all that.
You may criticise their beliefs but it helps them live their lifes...

I could not agree more with you on that, my friend.

I feel the same exact way. I wish many times that I had not read that many books and I sometimes wish I could be a religious person.

Religion creates a supernatural entity that we as humans can put our trust in so we can go on in our life while being one step-ahead of the uncertainties we may face.

I can relate to this and give literally hundreds of examples. When I was a Christian and I got on an airplane, a small prayer to my (former) Savior Jesus Christ would alleviate any fears. It took the weight off my chest and gave me strength. I could actually relax! I am sure most religious people say a prayer when getting on an airplane.

But the same experience as an Atheist was not so pleasant. When I got on an airplane in 2005, I felt...there is no words to really describe what or how I felt.

I felt empty, on-my-own, and was not so confident. I just thought maybe we got a good pilot and the mechanics took care of the airplane. See what I mean? The difference? The incident does not prove "God" exists or not in anyway but it does highlight the weakness of the human mind and the necessity of religion as a means of survival.

Eitherway, since my head is so full of Science, there is pretty much no chance of me going back to religion since it is physically/emotionally impossible due to too much knowledge. It feels weird now when I try to say a prayer.

I see religion as nothing more than:

A. A tool used over the ages to control people.

B. A safety net to make humans feel good about themselves.

I wish I could believe in an eternal nirvana....*Sigh*.

Why don't you? Why can't you believe that there is something greater than all of us out there? Go to church once and you'd be suprised at how the day you go, they talk about something that is happening in your life right then. It's amazing.

If you think about it, god creates all of us. God puts us through pain and suffering. Then god destroys us in a fiery maelstrom. I would never believe in or worship such a so called ''loving'' entity.

Another little fact I find interesting...It says in the bible that God creates man in his image, and essentially, programms each human uniquely to serve a purpose in his grand scheme. Which means when a robber kills an old lady for her purse, god made it so, to aid in his grand plan. Then that robber goes to hell fires. He predestines humans to be damned for eternity to blazing painful flames? So loving is he.

Lets not forget my favorite: How it says in the story of Kane and Abel, that God places a mark on Kane, and WHOEVER curses him shall be cursed themselves for all eternity. Interesting, considering there are only supposed to be 3 humans alive.

No, its who ever kills him shall be cursed for all eternity. All it says after that, is that God sends Kane to the land of nod where he built up brother hood, maybe that is why Kane has never died.
