X1550, X1650PRO, X1650, X1600, all of those. The X16xx can handle some graphics on medium. Get the Sapphire ones, they are the best.

Really? I'm not to keen on my Sapphire card.

My spahire card gave me free games, I don't own an identical ATI chipset / card model by another manufacturer, so have nothing to compare it to. I've found no real difference between the various card manufacturers.
Care to explain why you aren't keen?

Well, my first reason isn't about the card itself; the drivers that they provide on their site aren't worth the download time (since they're incomplete and don't work at all).
Another reason is that the DVI port has its own problems in which the signal seems to cut in and out non-stop. The VGA port works just fine, so I'm using that. Unfortunately, the damn thing was out of warranty before I even discovered the problem, but oh, well.
I dunno, maybe my card was just the bad one of the batch. Other than that, I'm sure I'd have no problems with Sapphire.

DDR or DDR2?
Most places I look only have them cards with DDR2.

Really? My X550 Sapphire is pretty awesome, But it's a little out dated now, I've had no problems with it to this day. 
Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

It pains me to say it, as untill this PC I had used ATI in every PC I ever owned, but nVidia is the way to go. You just get more bang for your buck. XFX makes a series of 8800's that have a great price and unmatched warrenty.
Also, I don't think ATI used DDR3 yet. One of many reasons their cards just can't compete any more.

"nVidia is the way to go" That comes down to personal preference, I like ATi more then nVidia, alas, I'm sticking to ATi.
My pc wouldn't support DDR2, let alone DDR3 so there is no point in me wasting £100+ on a 8800.
Oh, and ATi do use GDDR3.

Sometimes the other manufacturers give crappy ass coolers, Sapphire has better ones. Plus, cheaper. Most of the time.

Your system RAM type has absolutely nothing to do with what video card you can and can't use.
What's your budget for the card? What CPU and RAM amount do you have? What's the specs on this new PSU (rating of +12V rail and wattage)? The answers will help wonders.
As a general answer, an X1650XT should be the minimum IMO, but I'd personally go higher (and with nVidia, but will recommend ATi if it's what you want, and would thus suggest an X19xx class card).| luv2pb wrote on Sun, 13 January 2008 11:35 |

They have. nVidia first used GDDR3 on an FX 5700 card, and ATi, probably on the X800 class cards or maybe the later 9800XTs, I don't know. I do know they've used it. I think ATi was even the first to use GDDR4. The reason ATi isn't competing this generation is a combination of lack of performance and showing up REAL late to the game. They've had to rely on price, but with the 8800GT, even that's hard to do. Luckily, the price on that has gone up above MSRP due to supply and demand, so they have some hope in the lower price market.

I know - But GDDR2 would start bottle necking (because I can only buy from a few places, and the GPU and memory speed is pretty high)
Fuck, I can't even get a 256 bit card because all the new shit has that, and the older cards only support 128bit (due to 256Bit cards not being manufactured anymore. )

I'm going to have to really second sadukar09's suggestion (although after VAT, it seems to come out to about 30 pounds more, and I'm not sure how many more dollars that would equate to). The X1550 is a really low end card these days (and was low-mid when it was released). Your CPU will not bottleneck that card that much, and even if it does a little, it'd be foolish to purposely buy a weak GPU to have it be the bottleneck, ESPECIALLY when Crysis is part of the picture (GPUs are the bottleneck for it currently). I really think getting the weaker card would be the waste. I wouldn't even go lower myself, becuase you want a certain amount of gain for it to be worth it, but if you must, go no lower than an X1650XT (not Pro, not normal, and certainly not the regular X1650, all of which are in different classes than the XT).
As for the PSU, the wattage is fine (more than), but what about the +12V rail, or maybe even the brand, both of which I saw no mention of? If that's just some generic 600 watt PSU, I'd pass myself.

As for the PSU, That pc shop is down the road for me and I intend on asking them, But what do you suggest for a PSU? I need a 500watt PSU, Not sure on the voltage rail and stuff so yeah, Just need the basic specs on a fairly decent PSU, I think I can fork out the money on one.

yeah, I have 4 PCI x8 slots and their not going to use, I asked my friend on the last card I posted, he ranted on at the cooler, lol.
