Yeah, it isn't good news for the HD-DVD camp, but they've been written off before.

I still think they will win out in the end because they are backed by both Microsoft and Intel which are industry behemoths.

Bluray>HD DVD

HD DVD is 100% dead by the end of '08. Anyone who says different obviously doesn't know what their talkin about.

Sure, the studios may support the format, but that can still change. HD-DVD is still backed by the major players in the computer business, and they have the money.

Plus, as noted previously,, the HD-DVD format can use existing DVD replication machines, and therefore, economies of scale will be at play, as well as adaptability.

I have a feeling this fight won't be sorted out for a while. Format wars are won by consumer buying habits and desires. However, with the current economic slowdown in the United States, and consumers not willing to justify paying more for a movie when they find DVD quality good enough, it will take time for either format to gain dominance.

By then, it might be too late for either format, as people will likely just be downloading High-Definition movies by the Internet.

Blu-Ray is clearly much better and efficient when it comes to the job it is built for. The only drawback is that it is more expensive.

Now that those larger companies have cut HD-DVD completely, Blu-ray IS going to become the next standard.

This is completely the opposite from the VHS and BETA competition.

We live in the Wal-Mart age, so consumers will easily gravitate towards the cheaper product.

That is retarded to think that the only thing consumers care about is price.

If you had a PSP, would you go to buy a DS game for it because it is cheaper? Stern

Well, hold on... Studios will go where the money goes, so it's not as if HD-DVD should be written off. If anything, HD-DVD is just suffering due to the lack of proper marketing, and guidance. The technology behind it is sound, and it's more than capable to beat Blu-Ray.

It was only a couple months ago that Wal-Mart sold $99 HD_DVD players. Why they won't do it again, I don't know, but what I do know, is that people will buy that product because the price is right. Get enough people to buy that unit, and the studios will have no choice but to produce HD-DVD technology.

As for the DS/PSP comment, you're talking two different formats that target two totally different audiences. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are vying for the same audience, with perhaps HD-DVD going after more frugal customers, while Blu-Ray targets techies.

And trust me, consumers will almost always go for the cheaper item, as long as it's similar, and is shiny. I have to know this, because it's pertinent to my career. Mr. Green

The point of the PSP/DS thing was to show that two different incompatible items can be cheaper than the other, but you simply can't go for the cheaper of the two because one won't work with the other. You can't play a DS game on a PSP, much like you can't use an HD-DVD in a Blu-Ray player.

Or at least any of those duel format players haven't been sold yet anyway.

Also, don't buy stuff from Wal-mart, they are evil. Wink

Here's a couple reasons why I believe the fuss over Blu-Ray, vs HD-DVD is a bit stupid.

In a couple years, why bother owning a disc?

Remember Sony's last attempt to make a new format? The UMD? How much of a phail was that? Blu-Ray at this time is not winning shit, sooner or later it's going to fail, because non-techi's don't know DVD is a format on a regular CD then a new type of technology. People won't go for Blu-Ray cause it's more expensive and sounds dumb, people will go for DVD because it's the first of it's kind to make movies go on a CD.
