I'll recommend using a laser mouse, they are really fast.

The present problem you have with your mouse now, can be fixed by cleaning it, problem with old ball mouses's, they pick up alot of dust and shit inside them, which clogs the rollers.

Open it up and just empty the dust and crap out of it, put it back together and it work fine again.
