I was thinking about computer mice, and what if they had magnets on the bottom and then the mouse pad had magnets on it so that the mouse would hover? Huh

I dunno. Dont Get It

I see where he's coming from, due to the way this machine is set up, I can't have a mousepad, and so my mouse has to go over the desk, the pads that make it slide get dirty such that they stop working at least once a week. A levitating mouse would solve that, it would also increase the amount of power required, either by the mouse or the mousepad, as USB doesn't support anything over 5A, I'd suppose you'd have to use a powered mousepad.

It's also far too expensive.

What about a rocket powered mouse that burns your wrist every time you use it? We'd have less idiots on computers then, all of them would have charred wrists.

There comes a problem though.

You need to use force to move your mouse, and some of that is downward force. I don't know about you but I like to rest my paw on my mouse.

If you do this, it will defeat the magnets altogether unless you use magnets strong enough to repel eachother with a paw resting on it.

Then, with that, as soon as you take your paw off, you mouse shoots into the celing...

And the best part is when your paws are sweaty from a heated battle and it slips out of you paw and hit you in your face at 50mph...

I think this is starting to become a bad idea... Why not just use a black cloth instead?

It would be very hard to control. Ever try putting to like poles on a magnet together? They do their absolute best to avoid each other and move to the sides. It is like an invisible dome shaped force field.

Controlling a mouse on a round surface would be hard, especially with 0% friction. The mouse would be sliding all over the place.

And once you let go of the mouse it would try its best to get to the opposite side of the other magnet. Meaning it would hover along side of the pad.

Yes, however it will take quite a magnet to pass distance from your mouse, down your desk, through a case, through another, 4-5mm thick case, to get to platters which are only effected by magnets within a 1mm range to do ANY damage what-so-ever.

I think you're forgetting that a hard drive contains two kinds of magnets, the perminent kind, and the electryomagnetic kind... Both are some of the strongest in the world, so why are you pointing that out?

Fixes it. Try it, and see it work! Also, its makes your screen go on shrooms, great fun for the whole family!

CRT only, after that it needs degausing. Leave it there too long and the damage is irreversable...

Anyone ever played air hockey?

A mouse and pad system based on that could be interesting.

Actually me and stealtheye did a little research into this for a school project last year.

The verdict was that it is possible but not just simply putting 2 magnets above each other (cause the free floating one eitehr flips or "slides off").

Haha, Just thinking about all the iron in your blood blocking the blood passages in your hand and slowly developing gangrene, or liver failure made me laugh.

Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

Obviously, if the mousemat was powered, it would have a sensor that detected how quickly the mouse was moving towards the pad (Ie, pressure applied) and would adjust the strength of the magnets accordingly. That would solve the "mouse goes flying across the room problem".

I think a air-hockey style system may be more feasable, just noisy.

You can't control how strong a magnet is. It either attracts at one fixed strength, or it doesn't attract at all.

Do you know how resilient modern day computer equipment is to magnets? I had no where to keep my LA Sub after I took it out of the box and so it just found its way to resting on my tower. It didn't do anything. Sure old timey computers used to be dead when a magnet was in the same building but not any more. Have you ever mounted two Hard Drives close together? Each contains terrificly powerful magnets. They don't do jack shit to each other.

You can't get gangreen from magnets. The iron in your body is such a low concentration and always bound in very very large molecules so large that the tiny pull on the iron atom won't move the molecule.

A human being can be attracted by a magnet though but thats due to the magnetic properties of water. You need one hella big one though (house size).
