I thought I'd never make it.

Now I have to put up with dial-up speed for the rest of the month or install an expensive Wi-Fi network in the neighbourhood.

Thank god for Photoshop gif compression options!

EDIT: Now guess what my IP is

I see from your post that you are with Optusnet (From: *rivrw1.nsw.optusnet.com.au). How much are you paying per month? Given how much of a rip-off Optus generally are, there has to be something better from another ISP... (i.e. more data for the same money)

Same here, NY speed is lower. Probably because of information transaction speed. That test is SF
$69 per month, for both Internet and phone line

EDIT: OMG look at your IP! Tor? Or did you do that to classify the info? Also gif compression would have been a lot better for that. 10-15 colours like I had it. Jpeg compression is for images without big blobs of a single colour.

also, what provider is TGPI?

$69 per month, for both Internet and phone line... Those are Australian dollars? That's still 60 American dollar. Seems overpriced to me...

I get unlimited broadband for about £10 month (as part of the phone deal I'm on) however reconnection times vary from 2 minutes to 2 days (no joke) and the local exchange is so crap that 1.3 Mbits is all I'll get through it.

if it's 1.5GB with vista it would be pretty slow still, but with XP it isn't too bad.

If it's dual core...then it's not slow...and the normal RAM is 1GB.

RAM and processor have nothing to do with internet speed....

TPGI is TPG Internet. I am paying $60 (AUS) right now and getting 1.5MBps speed with 18GB per month. And I do use a fair bit of that, mostly with large SDKs and compilers and programming crap (plus other large files). I then pay extra for the phone to Telstra (which I dont use all that much) on top of that.

In any case, my experience with Optus is that they are a rip-off even WITH the bundling. (in fact, I hate their rip-off prices so much that they are on my "list of companies I will never buy stuff from") You could probably find a better broadband plan with someone else and then get phone through whoever has it cheap (or if you use the phone a lot, go for VoIP with someone like TPG or Engin and save even more money)

Oh and if your exchange has ADSL2+, you can get even better deals

Broadban, for some odd reason, runs like Dial-Up on Windows 95/98. :/

Again, internet speed has NOTHING to do with your PC hardware or version of Windows (I think, although I can't imagine Win95 being able to comprehend anything faster than a snail.)

The only software that MAY affect your speed is an excess buildup of spyware/viruses/trojans/etc. that like to collect data and send it off to remote locations via the internet, therefore taking up your bandwidth. Programs that also like to send your personal information out will take up bandwidth, but again, only if you have like 100 of them all trying to send info at once, and if you're stupid enough to actually enable sending of personal information.
