My family has decided to lower our internet download cap to 2 giga-bytes (without the consent of the only gamer in the house) per month.
How many hours of online renegade is this?

Well seeing as a 40 player server can usually get by on 2 gigs a month... you should be fine. This is an estimate though, it could be wrong.

EDIT: Actually you'll definitely be fine, I doubt it would even consume a gig through nonstop gaming.

I think he's just a gamer though. For me, I'd run out of bandwidth in a few days if not sooner... streaming music/videos isn't good for that kind of thing.

Caps like this are done to separate regular people and casual users from the pornhounds. Very Happy

Great way to extract more cash from people, IMO.

A full 40 players server will need around 2 terrabyte per month (ask Crimson)!

With 2 GB you should be able to game through the month but beware: the moment someone starts downloading anything, you'll be screwed. You should also be aware that many sites are currently optimised for boradband and hence use a lot more bandwith than they did in the past.

Downgrading to 2 GB is IMO not a smart move.

I'm not sure, when I signed up for broadband many moons ago I too got a 2GB cap, but it never seemed to be inplace. I can swear I've gone over it on numerous occasions but nothing's happened.

I wish there was a counter on my router, that'd be helpfull.

Playing in a full 40 player server usually uses something like 250kbps. Which is about 30KB/s. So lets say you play game for an hour and its a full server. After a minute of gameplay you've downloaded 3.6MBs and after an hour you've downloaded 216MB. So 2GB will not last you very long. If you join a 20ish player server its still 100MBs per hour.

I don't have a cap. (If I do, I haven't reached it, and I watch plenty of videos on youtube.) If I do have a cap, it's probably 60GB.

Caps? ISP's are still capping internet connections??! 2Gb's wouldn't last me a day. I'm constantly downloading/uploading. I sometimes do 10gb or more a day. Depending how many torrents i'm downloading. If they are capping it at 2GB, i hope they are only paying $2 a months for that sorry piece.

In answer to the topic's question it also depends on your download speed. Generally if you take a tenth of your speed, that's what you download at.

I have a 1meg connection (1.1 to be exact), so I download at 100-120Kbps on average.

We changed (they changed) the plan to a 2gb cap as a budget cut.
3000kps download, 210kps upload.

Now i respect the unlimited cap! I thought the internet connection was crud back then because we had to keep refreshing the router but now i want it back.

Probably have to keep refreshing the router anyways.
