Well consider that microsoft won't be supporting xp for much
longer,(weather we like it or not) and that vista will be the future os(also weather we like it or not) plus hardware will be more structured in the future toward Vista cuz it will be forced upon most user's(again weather we like it or not) so IMO go for vista and save your self some future hassle's.
Plus i believe that (read it somewhere) that dx 10 will not be for xp so... ya.

Aside from one moment when I had to install XP 8 times until all the basic hardware would work. (Installed it, keyboard wouldn't work, installed it, mouse wouldn't work, installed it, keyboard wouldn't work, get the idea?) I quite like it. Grr...
What I want to avoid is having nasty problems with all my hardware etc, and of course, I want to be able to run games. Anyone got any more advice?

One thing to consider: XP was built as a 32 bit OS and had 64 bit edition tacked on later, while Vista 64 bit was built from the start as a 64 bit OS. I have not used XP 64 bit so I don't know how stable it is, but I would personally prefer Vista in any case.
Aside from the fact it's a bit of a memory hog, it's VERY good in my opinion, and the latest updates and enhancements have solved a lot of the performance issues. Also SP1 is just around the corner, so those who always say wait for SP1 before getting Vista, here's your chance.
Anyway, I have been using Vista since BEFORE it was released in the stores ( MSDNAA members got it about 2 weeks before the official release ), and I have yet to have any real problems with it, or find any software I could not run.

We use XP 64bit for our server and from what I've seen it's very stable.

XP 64-bit is waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy superior to Vista 64-bit, especially when you have a nVidia GFX card cause the Vista 64-bit drivers for it aren't properly signed and thus not accepted byt Vista.
Overall Xp 64-bit drivers are pretty much on the same level as the Vista 32-bit drivers whereas the Vista 64-bit drivers are hardly existant.

Good job I use ATI graphics then. Bleh, making everything run as admin will be a one-time nuisance only, so I'll live. It's my older games that are the real worry. Anyone got anything on DX8 or lower DX games and Vista? (I could just go google here, in fact, I will, but post anyway)
Note... MS has confirmed XP SP 3 somewhere. Let me find a link.

CarrierII wrote on Tue, 09 October 2007 12:18 | Hehe, i doubt Vista can hog all 2GB of RAM.
Actually, both UT3 and StarcraftII (the only games I will buy for sure that are comming up) use DX 10, and I will get a DX10 card, so I may as well run Vista...
I'll try Vista. Thanks everyone.

Well just for your info: vista os needs 1gig of ram just for the os alone.
And you guys that think dx10 will be compatible with xp? lol
Well have you ever a future surprise coming, plus ALL future games will be and need dx10 if you want to get the most out of those games.
But either way Vista will be the future OS for gameing anyway.
And like it or not in order for gamers to utilize dx10 in the future you will need VISTA! muhahahahahaha lol
anyway it pretty much the thing that happened to win98 thing we all had to get xp and we all heard the bitching about it then it passed.
Same thing is going to happen with xp now as you will need vista sooner or later, as for linux well its not a gamers OS yet but hopefully 1 day soon;)

Ok, i read it and i see what your thinking, but i am partnered with microsoft and know of future info that you and many others do not know and i am sorry i cannot share some of the info yet, but the future of dx10 will be vista.
All i can say is a persons best bet is to use vista for the future of dx10 use, cuz it will be the best way to go hassle free.
good luck to that site and the people involved in that development.

I read somewhere that Vista uses around half of your RAM, meaning if you have 2GB, it'll use up one most of the time (true in my case) and if you have 1GB (not enough), it will use up around 500MB of RAM so you would want as much RAM as possible.
