As not so many of you may know, the state of Michigan has had economic turmoil over the past 6 years. Industry is being overtaxed and worn down from promised pensions to it's UAW workers, and small business is given little leniency to survive.
As of August 7, 2007, Michigan's unemployment rate is 7.4% as stated by The Michigan Labor Market Organization(http://www.milmi.org/) where as the United States as a whole is experiencing an unemployment rate of 4.6%(http://www.bls.gov/), far less than our state's condition. As of last Thursday, Michigan's legislative branch was under heavy fire to balance the budget deficit of 1.75 billion dollars. It was stated that Michigan's governor(Jennifer Granholm) would order a Shut Down of the state government if an agreement was not made and would be effective as of Today(Monday October 1st). Granholm's holding of the state government hostage seemed to have worked, as a tax increase was announced today. Among the things now being taxed include:
An increase of Income Tax to 4.35% from 3.9%. While this may seem minuscule, regular tax payers will have to forfeit another $350 to state taxes. While this may not sound like much, tell that to the 7.4% without work.

Among things to see a newly implemented 6% sales tax include:
-Business Service Centers
-Carpet upholstery installation and service
-Couriers and Messengers
-Document Preparation
-Investigation guard and Armored services
-Investment Advice
-Janitorial
-Landscaping
-Warehousing and storage
-Mini-warehouse and self storage
-Scenic Transportation
-Transit and ground
-Passenger Limousines
-Office Administration
-Other personal services(This looks like a loophole to include everything else)
-Other travel and reservation services
-Personal care excluding haircuts
-Security system services
-Service Contracts
-Skiing
-Interior Design
-Tour Operators
-Consulting
-Packaging and labeling services

So it's come to scraping quarters from a 13 year-old's paper route. Not to mention this entire taxing system seems to be nothing but a deterrent to small business and would inhibit growth of potential small commercial growth. I don't see a fix in sight, and I bet our state's economy gets much worse before it gets any better.
I know several people in these forums are from the state of Michigan. What do you guys think about this? Heck, what do the rest of you think about this? It seems to me that a cut in unneeded welfare recipients(cases such as real disability, recently unemployed, and the elderly not included.) would be a good start to fixing this budget rather than punishing those of us trying to look for work and/or working.

This is a prime example of why government spending is never a good thing. The government will ALWAYS spend more money than it has (thanks to all of the idiots crying for government money), and then when deficits like this arise, the people are the ones fucked. It's a grand system, isn't it?

Only difference is, is that while we are running surpluses each year running, your government will have to once again raise the debt cap. What is it now, like, $8.9 Trillion? Better raise it fast, otherwise it won't be just Michiganites that'll be on the dole.

Anyhow, many of Michigan's problems stem from its reliance on the auto sector. The UAW has done way more harm than good for the average-joe, and therefore, Domestic automakers are having to pack up and leave for other states, or countries, especially Canada and Mexico, and soon, China.
That shift could have been prevented, or lessened if the UAW realized that their demands could not be sustained in the future, or if people dissolved that moronic organization, and accepted the fact that you shouldn't be making $30+ an hour bolting rivets onto a truck frame, plus a gold plated health and retirement plan, and expect to keep it going.
Now that the deal with General Motors is done, only time will tell if the UAW will finally fossilize like the rest of the dinosaurs, or if it'll strangle America's last major manufacturing sector, and die with it.

That's sort of my point... our country is so far in the hole because both sides wanting to spend government money on their idea of a perfect government... which is just an incredible waste of money.
If governments were small and only spent what they needed, we'd barely have to pay taxes.

But those black people EARN their $30+/hr because they are really really edjumacated. It's true... who needs proper skoolin' if ya can jus rely on good ole UAW?
Again, I'll go back to the point that labor unions, especially when they get to a certain size, do more harm than good. They squeeze the business for all they got. The business gets a profit? The workers deserve more benefits and/or wages! The business losing money? It's because the workers aren't paid enough to do their work.
Bah Socialism.

Yepper. But we also pay into government pensions, Unemployment Insurance (which is like welfare, but you have to pay into it), and among other things, 'transfer payments' which the government uses to help prop up provincial governments that could not support their own services by themselves.
However, a good chunk of our change has gone to paying down our national debt.

Why has Ron Paul become the topic for laughter? I wiki'd him and if the views he has are reminiscent of his actual ideals then he doesn't seem so bad. Although I've never seen him or heard him speak in public. I have to start doing my political research again..
