Team fortress 2 is one of the latest Valve developed games that is solely based on Multiplayer.
Two teams fight over control points or capture the intel (CTF mode). There is also a mode where one team owns all the points and the other team has to try and take them all in an epic battle

This is also the first game to use the steam community permanent record but is no where near detailed as left4dead is going to be but its an excellent feature.
Basically this game kicks ass, just youtube some videos, it will give you the basic idea but nothing compares to the game play. I wasn't looking forward to this title at all and just got it for the HL2:Ep2 pre-order but oh man it gets you hooked and fast.
