Microsoft has lately been updating several files on all Vista and XP systems. That much is nothing new- but they're doing it without asking users whether they actually want the updates or not. Not bothered yet? These updates are hidden; there was never any notification when they were installed. Still not bothered? Here's the best part: Microsoft can do this even if you've disabled Windows Update completely via the Control Panel.
I don't doubt that some of you are going to not care, or not understand why this would bother anybody. To those people: yes, I know Microsoft is not out to take over the world. No, I do not believe that Microsoft intends to steal all the data on my PC. Don't even bother posting; this thread is not meant for you. It's meant for the people who actually give a shit about who may or may not make changes to their systems.
The thought that anybody other than me has the ability to decide what happens on my computer does not make me happy. I don't care if MS only means to change a few files that make some small and necessary alteration; I want and expect that they should tell me about it and ask my permission before doing it. Anything less than that is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Here's the link.
"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived of the use of them." - Thomas Paine
Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.

Wow, this totally pisses me off. I specifically turn off my Automatic Updates due to stuff I really don't feel comfortable installing, and wether or not that is disabled, they still get through?
We should sue, and I mean it, this is a invasion of privacy, and they have no right.

Read their license agreement...you approved their right. Of course I have no idea if thats actually in there because no one would ever read that thing.

trooprm02 wrote on Sun, 16 September 2007 14:51 | Well, last year when I did do a reinstall of XP, I used a WGA crack to get all the windows update with my pirated version. I would then just use he custom opt ion on windows update and always deselect any WGA update, but install the rest. Recently, you can't do that anymore, and it installs it wether you have it checked or not
|
Thats your problem. If you decide to install software illegally and it fucks up your computer then shame on you.
Edit: If you turn off auto update via the services (Disable the service) you won't get any updates. When I first got XP a few year ago I did what most people did and auto updated. Which totally fucked my computer. My computer would idle at 100%, the process that was using 100% was "System".
So after that, I read up about it and I was told to disable the service like many others have done.

Right, but he's not looking for warez, so he's technically following the rules (even if his post is sketchy).

No need to fully disable it, XP is quite flexible, and I used a custom installer with shitloads of options, auto update off, but I still update ofcoure, no reason not too. No WGA stuff since 6months ago, so Ive been fine Tbh, Microsoft does a good overall job at keeping their stuff secure, Im sure people who paid for XP wouldn't agree, but with just windows update, the windows firewall, and a router, im running 100% atm

Dude wtf are you talking about? If you don't disable it via the services, it will auto download and install shit you may not want. How is that flexible? Just because you used a 'custom installer' doesn't mean everyone else has. It doesn't really relate to this thread anyways. No reason not to update? Goes to show you really don't know Mircosoft that well. Let me guess you're the type of person to use MSN Live, huh?
Why would anyone want to use Windows Firewall? Thats like saying im using Norton because im cool and its has great virus/firewall protection.
