Strange. in the UK quotation marks are 'this' and inverted commas or double quotes are "this"

In Canada "these" are quotation marks and this' is an apostraphe (spell?). Apostraphes are generaly used to denote the removal of a letter in an abreviation as in don't. I beleive we use a different name for them when, "a person quotes someone 'during' speech."
