I prefer harddrive when watching the avi files because it doesnt wear and tear the dvd tray, mine is a bit slower now, but it still runs games/movies full speed.
and why is a normal repaired ps2 better than a working haxz0r ps2 running a whole new operating system which loads .elf files and games/movies.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention using a external DVD usb drive will work better than the ps2's if you dont have a modded ps2, the dvd tray will load the avi files and show as a harddrive since it goes by USB, so if you like playing your avi from a dvd, do this, much easier than swapping.
My new ps2 menu is just like the ps3/psp's but no cool waves in the background.
