Aprime: A piece of advice, your front left and right speakers will perform much better if they're further apart. (If you want the surround sound feeling)

Edit:

the iMac sadly only outputs in stereo (/2.1), I'd have to get that overpriced Audigy 2 NX to get surround.

It's a 5.1 sound system, it's connected to the bass which serves as a hub for the speakers, however since the iMac only has a stereo output I can't plug in the other cables I'd plug into, say, my old tower that has an Audigy 4. So I'm only hearing sound from the front L & R speakers and the bass - center and rear L & R are disabled.

No since you can't open it up. And even if you could there'd be no space to put a PCI sound card in there let alone a port to plug it into.

The soundcard on all macs by default is onboard. Only the Mac Pro and G5 Pro can install new soundcards and they have to be PCI-e ones.
