I just got a new Digital Camcorder (JVC GR-D70u), and I want to be able to take the video from the camera and put it onto my PC...but no such luck with anything. Everything I've read in the manual about hooking it up to your PC (USB) is about getting the digital snapshots off. I already have a digital camera, so I didn't buy camcorder for that (I didn't get the memory card for that either), I want to be able to get the video onto the PC, not the stills.
Bleh, if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Right now, my PCs not even recognizing the camcorder because it doesn't have the memory card (for still snapshots) in it.

If you want, you can go buy a program called dazzle. It is a movie maker program that I use. It works well for me.
We have two ears but only one mouth. So that we can listen more and talk less.

I just plug into a usb port. Dazzle has many programs you can buy. They start out in the $90 range. All software comes with the capability to plug any cam via usb port into your computer. It is neat because you can edit your vid nicely. I have a dvd burner so all my analog tapes are converted into digital and I can burn to dvd. It would also work to burn to cd depending on what you have. My comp also came with a windows movie maker, the speeds were very slow and it was impossible to get video onto the hard drive via the usb port because of speed. Again, the software comes with all the parts necessary to plug and play.

Well, I got some software (Pinnacle Studio, which I looked up and found out was pretty much the same as Dazzle, but better in some areas), but still that's not working.
I think I've figured out the main problem though, it's that my computer won't recognize the camera when it's in the USB port. When installing Pinnacle, it said something about plugging the camera into USB, and then windows automatically configuring the hardware...But it doesn't.
Just as well, in any movie making software where you choose your video device, it just ignores the fact that the camcorder's plugged into USB...

Yeah you need an IEEE 1394 Firewire port for the video. Sound Blaster Audigy cards have one built into them but you can probably pick up a Firewire card for under $20 from an e-tailer or maybe your locak PC hardware store. Also another thing use a small cable and not a long one as the transfer rate will be much higher when transfering video. You should have a little tiny slot on your video recorder arounf 8mm by 2mm that accepts a firewire lead. It runs over 400 Megabits a second compared to 11 Megabits on USB 1.1
I would have thought if it was a newer model it would have USB 2.0 support as that has a high transfer rate over USB 1.1 and is capable for the transfer of big data.

I saw a program that can do that, I just can't remember the name. I think it was like "Video Magician" or something like that. Google for it, such as "Bluescreen" "Video Magician" etc..

You could always try Adobe Premiere, really great video/audio editing suite.
You can modify any media file frame-by-frame and add plenty of nice effects. No idea how much it costs nowadays (my version is of course fully paid for *cough* bullshit *cough*.
