Well, I was rather nervous. I haven't gone with anesthetic before (well, I had eye surgery when I was 13 months old to correct a lazy eye but I don't remember it)... also my grandma is 69 years old and diabetic, but she's the matriarch of our family and I think she keeps us all together. I'm named after her (which makes it weird to ask for her room at the hospital since we have the same first and last name) but I can only aspire to be like her. My aunt takes insanely good care of her -- I doubt there are too many 69 year old diabetics who can still walk unassisted and haven't lost any limbs due to poor circulation.

So, I don't think it was a lot of fuss about nothing, even though I'm sure you guys weren't entirely serious.

Also, Vicodin for teh win. I have four huge holes in my mouth and no pain. Very Happy

Yeah, be very careful of how and what you eat for the next 1-2 weeks. Avoid eating anything that can break into small particles, and make sure you gently rinse anything out if anything gets stuck. When I had my wisdom teeth removed during winter break, the dentist told me I should try gently swishing some warm saltwater around my mouth after the first 48 hours had passed. I think it may help the pulpy stuff in there regenerate and harden a little faster. I was lucky, and I only had to take about 2 days' worth of hydrocodone (generic vicodin). If you were given an antibiotic as well, you MUST keep taking it until you run out. I hope you're as fortunate as I was in the pain department. I wish both you and your grandmother lots of luck.

My mom, sister, and aunt are all nurses, so I definitely understand the importance of taking all my antibiotics. The hydrocodone is doing its job because there is no way I should be pain-free with 4 huge fucking holes in my mouth, but I am. Smile How long did you keep bleeding? I put gauze in at 9pm which was about 7 hours after my procedure and when I woke up at 1:30am, it was all bloody. I just put my last gauze in, so we'll see how it goes. The injection site in my arm clotted just fine. Smile

My brother has a little tool that looks like a syringe but you use it with water to flush out the holes if something gets in them.

Thankfully, I work from home, so I only had to miss yesterday. I don't see any reason that I will have to miss work in the morning... I feel perfectly lucid and the pain is mostly gone.

I have pretty detailed aftercare instructions, and I was prescribed 16 vicodin with a refill, so I should be good to go. Now I just have to focus on my grandma and making sure she gets out of there soon.

Thanks for the feedback and advice. Smile

I forget exactly how long I kept bleeding. I do remember that I didn't change out the gauze as often as I was supposed to, but it didn't make a huge difference in the end. As long as I was careful to put only slight biting pressure on the gauze pads, but not an excessive amount, the wounds wouldn't bleed or reopen too often, though it did happen at least twice. You don't have too much control while you're sleeping, though, so just carefully position the gauze so you won't involuntarily cause it to rub the area the wrong way. I think I had the gauze at least through the second day, and possibly the third, and the amount of blood decreased near the end. The structure of the pulp in the holes will change and start to build itself up slightly by then, so you can use that as an indicator of progress.

What's weird is that I wasn't given that tool (plastic pipette or something?) to rinse the holes, so I had to carefully swish stuff out. My mom remembered having a tool back when she had her wisdom teeth removed. Go figure. Also, instead of laughing gas or a knockout drug, I just got a whole bunch of novocaine shots. Fortunately, this guy really knew what he was doing, and only the few necessary injections in my pallete hurt (quite severely, but it was unavoidable).

Anyway, as long as you keep taking your hydrocodone on schedule, you shouldn't have any aches or other pains strong enough to be debilitating. If the dentist did a good enough job, you might not even need the entire first bottle. Since you won't need those extras, you can just mail them to Dr. House Razz

I most definitely did NOT want to be awake for the procedure. Period. My sister did it on laughing gas and apparently the surgeon was putting his foot on the chair to brace himself to pull her teeth and she didn't even care. It might have been an interesting memory, but no... I did get some Valium, too... which made me very humorous and laughing. Razz

My swelling is already down, but I have been sleeping for most of the time since the procedure. I have to work in 6 hours, so even though I'm pretty well awake and have just had something like 10 hours of sleep, I should take another nap before work time. Razz

Diabetes suck Sad
I know all about it, since I got it too (type 1 though). You can live with it pretty well, but it is annoying, and type 2 is, from what I heard, worse as in the overweight that mostly goes with it also has a bad influence on the limbs etc.

About the dentist:
Teeth removal is the suckage, I had to get 4 teeth removed, and that hurts, afterwards in particular Razz Also, the 4 holes left are weird and annoying Razz

Weird... at least in the US, generic drugs are required by law to be equally as effective as the label drug. I've never had a problem.

The bleeding seems to have mostly stopped, and I'm flying without gauze. It did take like 12 hours. I'm doped up on Vicodin which is cool because it doesn't make you high if there's actual pain to stop. It doesn't seem to be having much effect on my caffeine headache since I haven't been able to drink soda for the last day and a half.

I just ate a yogurt which is the first thing I've eaten since Monday evening. I think I need to go make up a box of Jello too. Razz

I think I stopped bleeding almost immediately after.

There was no blood after the waiting period before I could remove the gauze, which means the little clean-up they did before moving me out of the room was enough.

And then there was my brother... who I don't think could stop bleeding for a long while...

I remember I had a root canal and the only thing they did was inject the nerve they were pulling out with something that made it numb about halfway through the procedure. =x I don't think it was too painful though.
I've had 3 teeth pulled, 2 of them permanent, so my dentist said that I would only have to get 2 of my wisdom teeth removed. The strange thing is that 2 of them are almost all the way in, and I have no idea where the other 2 are.
