yuo cnat epxort to w3d wiht 3d max 9 hwoverer if you hvae versoin 7 or 8 yu can unpcak the w3d_exporter.zip intoo teh main foolder were you instaled 3ds macks......................

When done, the w3d plugin will load at the startup of 3dmax. From there, use it like you would use RenX. I could be wrong, the last time I had my hands on 3dmax 8 was over a year ago.
