I haven't been running a firewall or router on my server for several years now.

Why? I have complete control over who uses the computer. I don't download worthless crap. Anything that is installed is only trusted software. I keep track of all access to my server.

I guess in a way I do have a router. But its only used 50% of the time(dual ethernet).

That's not entirely true. It's practically impossible to tell what gets on your computer, no matter how careful you are. Anyone could easily have a botnet on their computer without knowing it. Like 80% of the people on the internet have no idea that they have a botnet on their computer.

It's good to have some protection at least.

EDIT: oops, I missed "server". I thought you meant your personal computer.

Yeah, ZA Blocking all IRC traffic pissed me off, Big time.

Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

Yeah, ZA Blocking all IRC traffic pissed me off, Big time.

But for 95% of the world it's a good thing, because IRC is the favourite medium for botnets. It's the other 5% that don't like it.

The thing that stopped me using ZA was that disabling it doesn't disable it. It's still working. You have to uninstall it to stop it working, which just wasn't what I wanted.

if you set ZA up right, it doesn't block wanted traffic.

I have a router and Zone Alarm, and I guess I have the exact same problem that you do... if I my computer idles for, say, as long as an hour or so, when I try to get on the internet when I get back, I can't connect until I turn off Zone Alarm: "This page cannot be displayed."

So that's what I always do - turn it off, then turn it back on. It's stupid but I don't know how to fix it.

Hey! I get that too and always re-set the router Blush

ZA will not allow me to run IRC. I have to turn off ZA, run IRC then reconnect ZA.

However it was the only programme that caught "WIN32/Luder.V"

Long live ZA even if it causes a few problems. I can live with that. Thumbs Up

well i used to use ZA and norton antivirus a while back but then i got a trojan. so now my firewall of choice is filscelab firewall. its free, doesnt take many resources and best of all it shows you everything and you can configure everything in there (try it you wont regret it). i also purchased pccillin 2006 package last year which comes with its own firewall. i bought a router and i got spyware doctor. oh and i got another few antispyware programs lol. yeah i know im paranoid. but thats what happens when your computer got infected in the past.

True but if you just have a updated Windows and use your brains. ( Not just clicking yes on sites ) and surf with a Different browser. You are pretty save of not getting a virus. People who use p2p like Limewire and what not will have a 95% more chance. They are usualy also the people who dont know what shit they are running no offence. I do agree on the other part though you can't say your say without a virusscanner. Because in some occasions you would never be able to find it.

I run a good anti-virus program (the free version of AVG) and keep it updated, I don't install unknown crap and such and I have a good router which blocks any hackers or bots trying to infect my machine. My experience with software firewalls is that they universally SUCK and generally end up doing more harm than good. Especially Norton Internet Security. (although is there ANY current Norton product that DOESN'T suck?)
And I use SeaMonkey and not Intercrap Exploder. Oh and I disable autorun too which prevents nasty stuff from running if I plugged a flash drive or used a CD or whatever which had stuff on it that I don't want (such as anti-piracy rootkits included with music CDs).
And I disabled a bunch of crap that shouldn't be running such as Telnet.

All Norton products suck, but Symantec AntiVirus does a really good job. They are the ones who made Norton.

Incoming: a router. Everyone should have one; the only real threats are scans that then exploit you if you're not protected.

Outgoing: a software firewall. You only need outgoing protection if you install stuff you don't trust etc., or you're unsure about things generally - stuff like that. I'm behind a few JANET firewalls so nothing gets in and I know what I'm installing, so don't use a software firewall anymore.

I've used pretty much every software firewall there is, and Sygate Pro is the best. Not free, not sure if it's even developed still since I dont use it now - Sygate was bought out by Symantec (don't use Symantec's one).

Never had a problem except for when I had to roll back by computer. You get a mismatch, and have to re-update the hard way.

Nod32 does its job and doesn't ever bug me, the only indication I ever get that it's even there, besides when it finds a virus, are the update bubble in the corner(and it updates a few times per day).

ok just for all you people who think there safe becase 'i dont download porn' heres an article which might make you think twice HERE

also for you people who have trouble with ZA maybe you should actually look at your program. ZA has a function called automatic lock which blocks all traffic if left alone for a specified time or untill the screen saver comes on. To fix it open ZA Select Program Control | Main. In the Automatic Lock area, select On or Off. simple

It used to be, but now it's crap. It takes over your computer and uses all its resources.

I don't use a firewall anymore, because the chances that someone is going to h4x your computer is very low. Plus my router is a good enough firewall for me. I use AVG for anti virus.

My advice is to just stick with the router.
But if you DO want a firewall on your PC, whatever you do, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get Norton Internet Security. In fact, DO NOT use anything from Norton/Symantec at all. Their products (their current ones anyway) are CRAP.
Mcafee aren't much better.

Can't say much about any of the other firewalls, never used them myself, I just have a router and that works great for keeping any rogue intrusions (hackers, trojans etc) out of my computer. And I have a good anti virus program (AVG anti virus) for finding any nasties that get in through other means.

QFT

If I could be bothered, I'd install Kerio instead.

Also, I usually end up turning ZoneAlarm off, and I didn't have a Firewall or Anti-virus for months. I never got any problems until a driver I downloaded from Windows Update broke everything; that made me install a Firewall and turn off Windows Update for good. (I haven't used that for years anyway)

I agree with the fact that Norton and such is crap. However, I've found that Internet Security is the only thing I've found that blocks all banner ads, including the little one in AIM.

Please tell me though that one of these other ones will do the same. I want to get rid of Norton as soon as I can.

I use Trend Micro Internet Security 2007, includes firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware. A 2 year license for 3 machines is only about £40.
