Ok, I can connect to a computer through LAN using VNC. But, I want to connect to my friend over the internet. Does anybody know how to do this? I have a feeling I need to know my router IP and portkey but how do I find this out?

A good start would be to read the documentation of your router...

You'll have to open port 5900 and 5800 of your router admin (www.portforward.com for more info), run VNC server at your place and have your friend run a VNC client at his place.

You can find me in The KOSs2 (TK2) discord while I'm playing. Feel free to come and say hi! TK2 discord

You require to forward the ports: 5500, 5800 and 5900 to your internal ip if you want others to connect to you. If you want to connect to them they can forward whatever ports they want just aslong as the ports are the same in the server config dialog. The port 5800 serves as a java viewer for those who don't have vnc viewer.

Basicly put, you can use any port you want as long as it's forwarded to your internal IP and is linked in the server config dialog.

If you want to view the other machine you don't need to forward ports, since it automaticaly does it for you once it finds the connection at the other end. Only the machine/network needs to open the respective ports it uses.

Try windows remote desktop... If you want something easy to use then that's it. No messing around with downloading clients because it comes installed on almost all windows PC's.

I use it to do my school work. I connect to my home computer from school and since its setup as a private web developement server its on all the time and I can easily setup projects to download over to the school when they're done. Or I got my FTP for larger stuff.

Try "Hamatchi" my family and friends all use it. It can be used for all C&C games as a LAN network and is very easy to install and use.

I'd recommend Hamachi too, it's pretty easy and works really well.

Be careful with RealVNC, especially if you allow that port in your router - there are a fair few holes in it, though you should be okay if you make sure you keep it up-to-date.

Hamachi is awesome, but it's not VNC software.

Ok, i'll do a quick summary from my experience:

1. All the free VNC client/servers out there to my knowledge are NOT encrypted, this means your password is sent in plain text, easily sniffed then used by someone else.
2. It's risky to run VNC at all, especially on a standard port as most servers limit you to 8 character passwords.
3. If you use VNC (which I do) you should be running through a tunnel to encrypt it (ssh or hamachi will suffice). I tunnel my VNC thorough ssh which means I don't even have to open 5900, just 22, which I alrady had open for ssh.
4. Windows Remote Desktop does the same kinda thing as VNC, but links more closely into user accounts and makes better use of the connection
5. Logmein is a good service, it handles most of this stuff for you, including NAT traversal, only downside is you can't rely on it.
