Anyone know anything about getting Renegade to work on Linux? As I type this, my computer is backing up, so I can reformat into two partitions and install Ubuntu Linux as well as MS XP.
I will obviously get WINE, I checked their "Application database" which states Renegade is at Silver status, meaning they hope they can get it to work...
Anyone know anything? (Specifically, Does multiplayer work?)
Edit: According to the App DB, it works on some versions of Ubuntu, but they didn't test multiplayer, which is what I am after.

Yeah, Linux likes to act different on various computers. I had terrible experiences when I first started, but with more experience and the latest Ubuntu updates it's been much better. Which reminds me... I still need to burn Ubuntu 7.04 to a disc and try it.

Hi - this is something I have a fair bit of experience on. I have deliberately looked around for a linux distro that runs Ren in either wine, cxoffice or Cedega (to the uninitiated wine is the freebee by the linux peeps, cxoffice is the commercial arm with feedback to wine and cedega is a Canadian outfit who use wine to support gaming commercially on linux of what ever flovour)
I have tried - Suse 10.1, Mandriva, RedHat Fedora 6, Ubuntu, Damn Small Linux and a few others..............
Eventually I got it to work more or less out of the box on Cedega using Fedora Core 6 with the Gnome desktop.
You do need a failry pokey pc to do this though - mine is an SLI (does not work in Linux as SLI) GT7800 512Mb AMD 64 4400 with two Gig of RAM. At 1280X1024 with the sparkly bits turned on it manages a 60fps on a good day. The same system under WinXP pro turns in over 300fps using the DX9.0C fix. Also you get gliches all the time - the sparkly bits are not so good for many reasons, sound is patchy at best, many sliding style instances of lag occur at the machine end - all in all not a satisfactory playing experience. I have not overally bothered the support departments of the various api peeps - the game is so old it would be hard to justify thier time too much IMHO - which does not meant don't - I just have never bothered.
So guess who is about to partition his hard drives to allow Bill Gates back on his system so he can play Renegade as it was meant to be played?

Ok, for now, my Linux project is on hold, as it won't install on my Fake RAID (It's too complex for the Linux dmraid package)
I'm going to see if I can get another drive for it, probably a USB external one, around 20 GB. I'll post again when I have a working Linux install.

I had Renegade working just fine on Fedora Core 6 (minus Renguard, of course).
For the record I too managed it using Gnome, FC6 and Cedega.
Also I had the issue surrounding soft(-fake-)raid. With FC6 however it installed out of the box and detected the disks just fine. However, at the time I was using the Intel ICH5R softRAID. This is quite an old chip - the newer ones from Intel or other vendors might have problems, I dunno.
Some other observations:
The game ran just fine, as did installing the 1.037 patch + CP2.
The game play was just as comparable as to running it in Windows- the FPS was fine as were the graphics (was using an ATI 9800XT with the radeon open source drivers; the name escapes me)
You might have noticed my use of past tense - I had to remove Renegade (and in turn Fedora) as I was having major issues getting Ren and TeamSpeak to run. It turns out to be some sort of sound conflict. If that hadn't have happened I would still be running it.

I have ren working in Kubuntu 7.04 feisty using wine 0.9.33 the only problems i have with ren is 1. no rengaurd and cp2 2. it will crash (ren) sometimes wile loading a map 3. nod apcs r sometimes pink and other veh also don't show up right. other than that it works great. you can even have teamspeak natively on linux. so now ill i need to to wipe the butterfly off my hdd is itunes 7.x in linux natively or through wine.

Please make rengaurd for linux natively or run in wine with cp.x

no it doesn't work. it says "error verifying startup parameters."
also does it use internet explorer? that might be another problem.

You could try installing IE in Wine. From memory you need the redistributable package from MS and also DCOM too. I could be wrong but I thought IE was just used to display the MOTD and RG doesnt actually rely upon it?

i don't know if it relies on IE or not, and i do have it installed but most people that use linux don't want IE. anyway it still wont work with IE or not and I'm not a developer of any sort other then basic web page layout and that doesn't help much here. so i cant fix it but ill do all i can do to help.

I wish there was a boot camp for Linux.
do you get that error when you install RenGuard in WINE or when you run it? If it comes up when you try to install, try manually putting the files in the Renegade directory under WINE. You'll have to mount your windows partition if you haven't already and get the files from there I guess.

it installs just fine.
