Should I get the BFG 7950 512MB video card.

Or?

Wait for the 8600 card? I couldn't care less about DX10 as by the time I get vista way better cards will be out anyway.

If I get 7950 I can get is now! Dont Get It

8600 wait about 30 days! Dont Get It

WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT SUGGEST ATI I LIKE NVIDIA BETTER!

I've got a 1GB 7950 GX2. It works fine and I have no complaints, but I would get the 8600, then you will be set for DX10 games like Crysis when it comes out.

I would go for either if I had the money. If you can afford it, wait a month for the 8600.

Didn't know there were any cards out there with a gig of memory. The most I had seen was 840 MB...Where did you find that gem Blazer?

I'd go for a 8900 and not a 8600, but that's just me.

The 8600GTS won't be faster than a 7950GT or GX2 in DX9. Probably will be a tad cheaper, though.

So if you're going to get a new card when you get Vista, go for the 7950 now. I wouldn't get a GX2, though. I'd just get a regular GT. Wink

I'm sure it will be just as fast, if not faster than the 7950 in DX9. The 8800 already doubles the 7950 in DX9 performance so I doubt the 8600 will be less than half as powerful as the 8800.

And it outperforms the 8800. :V

Nvidia appears to be pulling another 5800 with this card.

There are no real performance numbers out, you're talking out your ass.

How exactly is doubling the performance of their previous generation "pulling a 5800?" The 8800 rapes every single game out there.

The R600 is meant to compete againt the G80. nVidia is releasing the G90 shortly after the R600 is released, then are planning to release G100 in 1Q 2008. nVidia has gone unchallenged for the last 6 months, and not only has it made them hundreds of millions of dollar, but it has put them far, far ahead.

I'm not saying the R600 will be a bad card, but it would simply be illogical to buy it since the card it is competing against will drop drasticly in price at the time of its release and be outdated.

Edit: The RV630 is a mid range card, likely to be the X2600. At 125W that measn you'll need to connect it to the PSU since the mobo can only supply 75W through the PCIE slot.

http://level505.com/2006/12/30/the-full-ati-r600-test/1/

Those were the only R600 benchmarks released and they were found out to be fake.

Plus in the past I have had tons of graphics problems with all ATI cards, now I only use Nvida.

To be honest though, I'd rather have a power efficient video card that is a little slower than one that consumes a lot more power. I seriously hope we don't end up buying 1K watt PSUs in the near future. Those things are just so unnecessary. And imagine what your electric bill would be...

But if it meant using ATi instead of nVIDIA, I wouldn't do it.

My parents electricity bill is at least $40 more a month just from me alone due to my servers running all the time. One reason I am skeptical of upgrading to these more powerful components is because I would rather not have to pay the electricity bill right now...

Although, if I did do an upgrade, I would pay it anyway since I'm the one who uses it all the time.

To me though, they should start looking into ways to reduce the power consumption instead of just increasing output power. In the end, its going to bite them in the butt when people choose to save on their electricity bill rather than purchase new components.

I think right now it's biting them in the butt. They're responding to this problem, but not as much as I would like. At least they're working on it...

I started figuring this out when I got my 6800 almost two years ago, when I saw how huge and power hungry it looked.

Shrinking the die allows it to use less power. The G80 is 90nm, the G90 should be 80nm, and the G100 should be 65nm.

The R600 is 80nm.

That isn't something to be proud of...

And, the 8600 should be around a 7950 GT for the GT version and the 7950 GX2 (perhaps a tad less) for the 512MB Ultra version. This is based on the fact that the 7600GT matched the top card for the 6-series. IIRC, the 6600 matched the 5950, too.

OMFG YEAY! Here is my story of ghetto video card repair!

I saw a old AGP 64MB card sittin there, the fan is the same size as the one that broke on the card I am using. I took the fan off of that card and took the fan off of the card I am using. Put the working fan on the good card, BAM! Now it is keeping it cool! Now I can play games as I get the rest of the money for a new card! Big Grin

Just chipping in here:

I wish cards used more power. My computer uses a lot of power already but it could always use more.
