If I were in the position you are...
I would just trash it if it was still in my possession. I wouldn't be able to live everyday thinking the guy who lost it is getting killed slowly inside, and the object would remind of it everyday when I think and look at it. If you trash it, there isn't anything to remind you of it, and you wouldn't think about it.
But that doesn't mean you should sell it, just throw it in the dump, you will get money, spend it on something else that will remind of you it, if you get anything linked to it, and the object, you will move on, besides, if its already broken, where would it end up in the end?
Your just going to save yourself all the trouble.

Im not exactly demanding anything. I just told him that the right thing to do would be to return it., like I said in page 3. I have told the computer tech man who took it, and he told me he is waiting for them to get cold feet. Me and the tech guy are fairly good friends and it would hurt me to not return, or help return the laptop. the tech guy has lent me a laptop for home before to restore a minimac using targetdisk mode. The laptop fried while it was charging on my livingroom table and i returned it and apologized while explaining what happened to it. He fully understood and I think this incident is gods way of hinting to me that i can pay him back for the computer by telling him who took this recent one.
