Im getting a stolen laptop from a kid at my school. I can either keep it at the risk of being caught due to a tracing device, or return it to the school. I want to keep it, But I dont want to be arrested. If I return it and dont tell them who originally had it will they suspect that I took it and just felt guilty?

Return it and tell who stole it. Simple as that.

Its such a hard decision. a 2000 dollar laptop, or some guy saying thanks that runs a school that hates me. What will I get out of returning it anyways?

Switch it, what would you want someone to do if something that valuable of yours was stolen?

Okay, say someone steals your 2000 dollar laptop, and because they dont like you, they dont give it back, how would that make you feel?
Give it back, its the right thing to do.

That's not really a hard decision. Quite the easy one if you ask me. Return the fucker.

Sell it on E-Bay. Razz [/joke]

Just give it back to him.

The school doesnt like me, I have no problem with them. The laptop is reported by the kid im getting it from to be scratched, dented, and stained. The school can take it back, but they arent going to use it. It will just sit in his office broken. Should I reinstall the operating system for him since the kid replaced it with Linux? I am so hesitant to return it. The kid already checked. I am just unsure if there s a device in the BIOS to take a picture of the thief when it turns on and send it back to the owner. I googled anti theft devices for macs and a few are in the BIOS. Others just send an ip address to the owner when it connects to the internet.

I have tried to do so much for others and I never get anything in return. I think this is my week to do the biggest thing for someone. Ill attempt to give it back, but i just dont want to be accused of stealing it. What if he jsut decides that im blaming it on them? there is no way to prove that the kid did steal it.

Give it to someone else. If you return it, you'll be marked as the theif. If the cops find you with it, you'll be marked as the theif.

DO NOT GIVE IT BACK! I know I wouldn't, I have had so much shit from people, one day I had 5 dollars in my wallet. I dropped it and relised it a few minutes later I found it and the 5 dollars was gone. It was just money so I could buy so fucking lunch for the next 2 days at school. If I had found a walled with 5 dollars in it I would return it and not take the money but no they fucking took it and I had to go 2 days with no goddamn lunch. Another time my brother set his phone down when we were out at a fast food join and we set out food down than we went to wash our hands and came back and it was gone. People don't give a shit so I dont care anymore take stuff you want. You see a iPod someone left in there unlocked locker in gym class take it. They probably stole it from someone else anyway.

Return it to the school.

On a related note, I lost my wallet nearly a year ago with around $70 or so. It hasn't been returned, even with photo ID in one of the slots. People are dishonest (including myself, which I'm not proud of). Don't become a statistic.

If you keep it, you're as bad as the sorry fuck who stole it in the first place. Do the right thing and give it back- if you have doubts about doing so, think about what could happen to you if you don't and then get caught with it. That's not a few bucks out of somebody's wallet, that's an expensive piece of equipment- and you don't want to wind up in court explaining to a judge that you held on to property you knew was stolen because you just didn't feel like returning it. For your own sake and for the sake of salvaging some little bit of human decency, be the better man and do what's right.

"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived of the use of them." - Thomas Paine

Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.

even if u dont get anything by doing nice things just give it back tell the guy somone gave it to u and pay him like $50 (and even so its much nicer doing somthing and not getting anything) wanting to get somthing for doing somthing nice is rather being spoiled (no offence).

I would return it anonymously. Make sure you wipe all of your fingerprints off, because as someone pointed out, they could blame you for stealing it, and while it's sad that someone would get owned for trying to do the right thing, it can and does happen.

As for keeping it, if you found it in a field or something I'd say yeah, but since you *know* that it's stolen, that's not cool and it would be on your conscious...plus your parents will surely ask where you got it, so you will have to lie to them and those sorts of lies usually just get you into more trouble later, so best to just get rid of the damn thing, and avoid all the crap.

P.S. If you succeed in anonymously ditching it, also be sure to not tell anyone, because just knowing that someone gave you something stolen makes you an accessory. With this in mind, its probably best that you don't accept it at all Smile

If you really want a laptop, just ask for one for your bday or something, say that you need it for school.

My parents are assholes. I told them that the kid was pissed at it and I was fixing it. I think im going to pawn it at the shop down the street and give the school the money anonymously so they can buy a new one instead of having a crappy one returned. Its also harder to trace where money came from because of how many people have had it.
