The only thing that I have to disagree with you Crimson, at least in part, is the idea of not being a friend.

It's fine to be a friend, however Parents need to know when the line should be drawn between when the kid requires a friend and when the kid requires a parent.

That's how my parents treated me, and it's worked quite well. Perhaps my parent got lucky on finding the right balance, but they were able to decipher quite well as to when I needed a friend and when I needed the belt.
