OK, I have had Ren since around '03, and I have a problem with RG for the first time now. I uninstalled it for a while about a year ago for some reason I dont remember. I recently started playing Ren again, installed RG, and it would come up but, it was white. It was just a white window with a little window on the top-left of it. About 5 secs later, it brings up an error message. Game.exe has encountered a problems and needs to close, I have the option of sending an error message or debugging it. I click debug, the window closes, and Ren doesn't start. I have tried zunnies tutorial "Simple Guide to install Renguard no cd included" and it did not work. I saved my data folder to my desktop, uninstalled Ren, uninstalled RG, installed Ren, updated to Ren ver 1.037, logged into WOL, logged out of WOL, installed RG, and it does the same thing. please help me because i've been !forcerg'd from 5 servers cause i 0WN with a shotgun. someone please help me cause i hate being kicked, for being a good player

i have the same problem. and so far no one here has come up with anything helpful, not to say they won't, but it hasn't happened yet.
Since, like me, it has worked for you in the past, it's a safe assumption it's not your computer - ie, they will ask if you have a 64 bit chip or windows 2000 or other irrelevant stuff.\
Or they will bring up the usual "is your firewall blocking it?"
duh...
Since we have the same problem, do you update windows frequently? What other programs do you have that may affect this? And if possible, a screenshot of the problem and your desktop?

Nothing in your Renegade folder? Sometimes I get this error when I have RenD3D9 in my folder. As for Windoze 2000 and 64-bit versions, SVKP, the packer used in RenGuard, does not work on those platforms.

ok. some of the threads i've read say that windows update might be to blame. which particular update, not sure. KB917422 has caused a lot of gam related issues, but after i removed it, yes it is possible, the problem persisted.
also, you said you reinstalled Ren, i'm assuming you used your old Renegade disks, NOT The First Decade. This correct?

It's one of the windows genuine advantage updates, noone knows exactly why it messes up RG, but it does. And you can't uninstall the WGA updates...

hmm, must have been a update for the firewall since Renguard can bypass the Windows Firewall without Windows FW knowing it, thats why you should always use an alternative instead of Win FW
Offtopic:
That doesn't suprise me.. Alot of games went incompatible or unstable when SP2 was released there is some occasions where it works fine but it has done more harm. I hope that Renegade will usable in a decent way with Vista else it's going to be a no no anyways.

thanks danpaul, but I really don't feel like going through those tough as nails, user unfriendly, instructions on how to just remove stupid updates. i will just wait for RG 1.04 to come out, uninstall my piece of bugged @#$% RG, and be happy  . thanks for everybody trying to help but thanks to gozy and danpaul for *solving* my problem. If I do end up getting a server, i will use BrenBot, because i know danpaul wont make lousy piece of @#$% code for it. XD

I still suggest you google 'uninstall WGA updates'. Some people have made easy to use programs that do what microsoft proposes in your place.

As a note to RG devolpers, I have that update installed, but due to a long story I won't bore you with, My copy of Windows didn't validate, I do -not- have this problem. Mind, I never once had a problem with RG...

ok, well i found a few tutorials and programs that looked easy, except one problem: they didn't agree. Some would say to just uninstall WGA, some say to just get an alternate update mechanism, and a lot of other things like renaming certain files, so i am not sure what i should do because i dont know a whole lot about computers.  But, if you could either tell me what to do, or just tell me when RG 1.04 is coming out, or at least the BETA, tell me.
