I am looking to build a new PC for my sister to a fairly low budget, sort of a surprise xmas present from my mum and myself, and was planning to go for an AMD processor.

Until now I have always used Intel processors, so I wanted to see what suggestions everyone on here has for a good, high value for money AMD processor.


And please refrain from the usual Intel > AMD / AMD > Intel wars... Rocked Over

Well, right now the Intel Core 2 Duos are faster than any AMD out there. But since you're going for budget, the Athlon 64 series (socket 939) would be the best for you. Their prices got dropped severely, so you're just in luck.

well in the netherlands there isn't much difference between a Socket 939 and AM2 so I would take the AM@ since it's newer and has a slightly higher performance. The cpu would be anything Ithink, since even a 3200+ would be more then enough for the simple office work. If you're planning on video editing etc then you might diced to go for an A64 X2 sincethose are dual cores.

I forgot to mention what it was to be used for, didn't I Razz

Mainly it will be used for office type work, and the obligatory MSN, but she also tends to play sims 2 now and again, so preferably it would need to be fast enough to run that at an acceptable level of graphics.


The idea is the PC will be pretty much barebones, and she can buy any extras such as a dedicated GFX card herself if she wants to.



I have done some looking around, and this is what I have come up with for now, any comments? (Will be coupled with 512mb of RAM in 2 256 sticks)

Asus K8N-VM A64, Sempron Skt 754 PCIE 16 X
AMD Sempron 3100+ (SDA3100BXBOX) 64 Bit Architecture 1.8ghz Skt 754 Boxed


Although the motherboard / cpu are 64bit, I would probably still install XP 32-bit, for compatibility with a wider range of software (and so she does not start shouting at me when something refuses to run ^^)



I will look at the Athlon 64 / AM2 processors though, thanks for the suggestions.

Don't go with AM2. It costs way more than 939.

why now save 10$ and spend another 200-300 when you need to ugrade it somehow? I would just make sure that if some thig would happen I would be able to upgrade, even on a budget comp.

That's actually one of the minor differences. In the higher class AMDs the difference is in the hundreds.

I wouldn't get a 754 processor, no real rason it's just I'd prefer to have socket 939 in my desktop PC.

I've got a Sempron64 3400+ with 512Mb RAM and a 256Mb GeForce 6200 and I can run Renegade and Sims 2 at 1280x1024 at 60fps comfortably. Very Happy

I doubt you are running Sims 2 at that FPS with that resolution. The game has the worst engine ever. Yeah, of course it's perfectly smooth when you don't move the camera, but once you do it lags a whole lot no matter how fast your computer is really.

I don't know about that... I can run The Sims 2 pretty smoothly with my Athalon XP 2400+ , FX5500 & 768MB RAM.

So what's the difference between the 754 and 939 sockets? I am guessing the 939 is newer, but other than that is there any significant improvement over 754?

well none of the A64 does get seriously hot with the boxed cooler so.. That shouldnt be a problem. But the advatage of S939 is that it has dual channel support while the other does not.
