Allright, so a buddy pulled me into renegade modelling. Although i cant even model a cube in renx, i felt like trying out 3dmax 8. So i installed the 30 day trail. I than downloaded the w3d tools ea released (way too late). I dropped all the files where they should be dropped, fired up 3dmax, and got this cute error.

In total shock i doublechecked the readme, but no good.
I probably just forgot something even a retard can do...

help Dont Get It

edit: the dutch part says "cant find the requested module"
and yes, im sure everything is in place, at least i hope so

Lol, you make it sound like you stole my candy...

Anyway. I downloaded it, opened it, and tried to install it.
Where it said "will now check your previous versions and update where possible" i pressed OK.
It was done in less than 1 second so i assumed im up to date already.
I even tried to uninstall it to than reinstall again, but it doesnt pop up in the software list, so i couldnt.

After that i started 3dmax again, only to get the same error smacked in my face again.

edit: the new w3d viewer also reported a missing dll (d3dx9_27.dll), so i googled it and downloaded it. afterwards i put it next to w3dview.exe and the viewer lived again. i smell a relation...

problem solved, i moved that dll file to my system32 folder. now both 3dmax and w3d viewer load if from there.

i find it weird, i freshly reinstalled dx9, checked wich dll files were installed and noticed just this one file was missing. Other dlls named d3dx9_xx.dll (where xx is 24 to 31) were installed, just not the needed number 27.
