Stupid google.

I really don't like what google is doing. They are buying everyone out, developing spy software, and that whole China search engine thing. Seems to go against their motto: "Don't be evil".

* All companies buy smaller companies that are in like business or can expand their resources
* Developing spy software?
* Its against the law in china for their people to find certain things on the internet, Google just conformed to their laws so that they could still use google.

The first thing that came out of our mouths when we heard that Google is working on a system that listens to what's on your TV playing in the background, and then serves you relevant adverts, was "that's cool, but dangerous".

The idea appeared in Technology Review citing Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, who says these ideas will show up eventually in real Google products - sooner rather than later.

The idea is to use the existing PC microphone to listen to whatever is heard in the background, be it music, your phone going off or the TV turned down. The PC then identifies it, using fingerprinting, and then shows you relevant content, whether that's adverts or search results, or a chat room on the subject.

And, of course, we wouldn’t put it past Google to store that information away, along with the search terms it keeps that you've used, and the web pages you have visited, to help it create a personalised profile that feeds you just the right kind of adverts/content. And given that it is trying to develop alternative approaches to TV advertising, it could go the extra step and help send "content relevant" advertising to your TV as well.

Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

Thinbk of this: do you prefer google to buy it or let's say Microsoft?

I think this is the best solution for youtube.

Put yourself into the shoes of the guys that implemented Google. Both under 30 and made almost a billion pounds in 18 months.

If that had been me, Id be laughing at the world.

Think about it? For most of us its a free service that we have all used and will continue to use.

No great problems there except a lot of "green eyed monsters".

The guys are just another success story. I wish it was me. Big Ups

"Google is misunderstood a lot, as seeming to want to dominate the Internet. They see themselves as an enabler, not a portal. They acquire as much web traffic as they can and monetize it based on their technology,"

Google has a lot of crazy (good) things going for them and I have personally been involved with a company that was "to be bought" and may still be bought by them. They're not another Microsoft out to get the world and they have some very creative people. HOWEVER...

There is only ONE way for that to be legal, and that is to download and enable some sort of software that would permit them to do that. They can't just put software on your computer without your knowledge - especially recording audio - because that would be illegal. In many states, it is LEGAL to record others by video tape (don't get too excited all of you voyeurs out there) but becomes ILLEGAL if it includes audio. Seems backwards to me, but - meh - thats the law. I wouldn't worry about this issue too much even if they did develop the technology and use it.

they'll probably have it on some installers for a program which makes you agree to terms and conditions, and, for people who casually install stuff, it could be bad.

This is a signature. Reading this is wasting your time.

I doubt they'd be able to handle that like they do their sneaky little toolbars. It's a much different technology and invades privacy. It would have to be like a flashing screen that says "WE'RE WATCHING YOU - CLICK OK TO CONTINUE"
