I guess I have inhuman eyes.
and spheres do have sides.
In the 3D world, it's called a sphere.

By your logic, a circle would also have sides.
You can't calculate the circonference of an object that has sides.
Your image does not show a sphere, but a solid with multiple sides.
By definition, a sphere is "a three-dimensional surface, all points of which are equidistant from a fixed point."
It was probably a sphere before its amount of polygons (I'm not really familiar with computer 3D lingo) was downscaled for... I don't know, the sake of rendering the scene quicker.

I'm speaking from computer 3D lingo. I've learned this by using 3D modeling applications. It's just what they call it.

I was taught a circle had 1 side (all the way round)

Read: Sides (PLURAL)

This is a signature. Reading this is wasting your time.
