i usually have about 6 programs running constantly all the time for months on end and i've had no problems what-so-ever.
The only problems i've had is:
virus
and......
erm......
That's about it.

icedog90 wrote on Fri, 08 September 2006 14:56 | People who think Windows is a good operating system are nubcakes. You obviously have never used Linux before (especially with Xgl).

And the problems I have with Linux are...
erm...
umm...
nothing.
|
Owned!
what i don't like is people that say they are used to windows and don't want to switch. well the version i am using (Suse) is very much like windows (expt all the benefits of the linux kernel)
|
Well you can go with Linux, i'm going with Windows myself since it can use and run all of the applications i use today. If you don't properly know how to use Windows, why use it?
Also, in my defence, i actually admitted i have never, ever used a Linux machine in my life, and have only just got to grips with Mac OSX.
|
lol, i wasn't saying that in a sarcastic way. it was funny, i couldn't resist. i have seen mac os everywhere but i have never got round to trying it. is it free?

On MacOS: It's great, I run a quad-boot on my PC with XP, Vista, Ubuntu and MacOSX 10.4.6
That's right, you can run MacOS on pretty much ANY computer now! Just take a look at www.osx86project.org, it has guides and links to all you need to run MacOS on your normal computer (provided you have MacOS on a DVD, of course )
On Linux: It's great..etc.
However, all the crapola about dependancies really does annoy me, if I want to install a program on Linux there's a good chance I'll either have to "apt-get install" the dependancies, or, because that's often not worked, find them manually on the internet and compile/install them. Another thing that annoys me is Xgl/Compiz. I have to admit, the effects are pretty cool, but only if you have a decent graphics card that someone can be bothered to make Linux drivers for, and besides, I hate anything that doesn't have Antialiasing nowadays. Oh, and it's far from finished, and plays Videos and other graphicky things rubbishly.
On Windows: I don't see why everyone hates it so much! I have a Sempron64 3400+ with 512Mb RAM and I've probably had more crashes on Ubuntu/MacOS than on Windows. I've never had a single virus/spyware (Of course, that depends on the websites one visits!) and it hardly ever seems slow or sluggy without me accidentally putting an infinite loop in a script or something.
All in all, I think Ubuntu and MacOS both have great potential, as does Vista, but, at the moment, there simply isn't enough worldwide support or programs to make them a completely viable solution for me.
Therefore, I'll stick with what I got now.
Although...
Has anyone actually got Renegade/RenGuard/WOL working under Cedega? I don't like Cedega (Crap license, Open Source all the way!) but I do use it.

as i said in my post i could bet you don't push it as much as i do, i normally have:renegadeserver, renegade+rengaurd, VC++, HLBot, 2 or 3 windows for browsing various files running. sometimes the window bar(blue bar at bottom) is so full i dont dont know what is running and what isn't i try to close programs but i need them lol.
|
Lets see what programs...
- IDA x2 (One for RenegadeFDS on windows, one for Linux)
- mIRC x2( I should use just one but I don't)
- RenegadeServer
- RenGuard + Renegade
- Visual Studio
And my processor is only 2.40GHz
Let all your wishes be granted except one, so you will still have something to strieve for.

i got renegade working on cedega with WOL. unfortunately, i couldnt install RG, as the way cedega installs programs is it creates a new virtual c: drive for all the games instead of just installing them to the same virtual drive.
This is a signature. Reading this is wasting your time.

you do know that there is software for mac called boot camp, you can run pretty much any windows/linux software in it, and since i know you can afford it, you may as well do that
http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
also, there are some games you can play on mac. WoW, I think UT as well, there are many more, just don't remember them.

If ubuntu messes up on you, it's because you set it up wrong.
I have Xgl and I can run MULTIPLE H.264 videos at decent resolutions and overlap them, make them transparent, and do all kinds of other stuff with them and they don't lag. In Windows, ONE H.264 video that is a pretty decent resolution will lag a whole lot for me. There's nothing more to say here.
I don't see what's wrong with apt-get install. It works perfectly fine for me. I think it's nice because I can easily find a free program with a package manager, instead of having to search Google (and most likely find a trial).

Question is, do I want to run multiple overlapped transparent H.234 videos?
EDIT: Nevertheless, I'm interested. Do you have an nVidia card? I have a GeForce 6200, I can run a HD video *fairly* fine in XP, but in Xgl I can't seem to find a working video output thingy. Then again, I haven't tried for a few months now, there's probably been a few thousand updates.

You mean H.264. H.264 is probably the best video compressing codec out there right now and it is very powerful. It uses a crapload of CPU to decode.
I have a Geforce 6800. I used to have problems getting video to work in Xgl/compiz, but after a new version of Ubuntu it randomly seemed to work fine. Remember though, Xgl is totally new and it's not even in beta.

| Yes, It'll take me quite a long time to get that right.
Anyways, I'm installing Xgl and compiz now. Hopefuly, the videos will work better on Dapper than they did on Breezy...
On Cedega: Every time I try to install Renegade, I set everything up but when the installer's actually supposed to start nothing seems to happen. Do I have to try and use that non-graphical installer someone made, or is my computer b0rked?
Also, is everyone here using KDE, or are there some GNOME users other than me?
EDIT: OK, I changed some things, and now I can get as far as installing the game. However, when it actally starts copying the files, it says that "TDBERR" is copying and locks up before the little rotating soldier appears, so I still can't finish the install.

I use Gnome.
just so you know, you can't count on getting Renegade to work in Cedega if you have Xgl/compiz. Because right now direct rendering is not supported in Xgl. But if the nVIDIA drivers for Xorg 7.1 EVER COME OUT, then that will change. I can't even believe ATi released Linux drivers for Xorg 7.1 before nVIDIA.
